Dredger was an agent for DI6. A government agency set up to deal with matters of national security, Dredger, (his Christian name was never given) differed from most agents, because of his unorthodox methods of going about his job. The first story typifies this. When an enemy agent refused to give information, claiming he couldn't speak English, Dredger put a grenade in his mouth, and told him to start writing! He learnt English fast!. His partner, Simon Breed, was a total opposite. A 'by the book' man, who always seemed edgy whenever Dredger was about. Despite this he usually went along with whatever plan Dredger hatched, maybe because he was scared to go against him.

Dredger, on a plane, threatens a terrorist with a grenade. (Issue #1).

Dredger always strived to complete a job, and he saw no price as too high to accomplish this. He often put other people at risk, and wasn't scared to risk his own life if necessary, much to Breeds distaste.

In the very first issue of the combined Battle-Action, Simon Breed was killed in a car bomb explosion, courtesy of a 'gone-bad' secret agent.

Dredger was loosely modeled on Clint Eastward's 'Dirty Harry' character. His similar style, patter and 'shirking authority' manner, is what grabbed the reader. You simply didn't know what he was going to do next.

The strip was written by numerous writers, including Steve (Action Man) McManus, Kelvin Gosnell, Pat Mills (the creator of Action) and Geoff Kemp. Dredger had a various number of artists throughout its lifespan, including John Cooper.
