What is a cookie?

In real-life, a cookie is a type of biscuit which tastes very nice after being dunked in your coffee. In the virtual world, it is just a way of storing information from the internet site you are visting to your own PC! Sounds sinister doesn't it? But they really are quite harmless.

To explain - Cookies are small bits of information which are passed from internet sites to your very own personal hard-drive (i.e. the C-drive). There are many myths surrounding the use of cookies, which mainly revolve around the notion that a smart programmer can get unauthorised information from a user, like an E-mail address, passwords, personal letters etc. Let me set the record straight. A cookie can only STORE information, it is not an executable program that can rummage through your folders and files. You'd be surprised just how many cookies that you already have on your computer. Just take a look within your hard drive at the location (roughly) c:windows/cookies. I bet you didn't realise just how many people have been writing stuff on your hard drive (the scallywags!).

Well, as a scallywag myself, I have also started writing to your hard drive. The information which I am sending to it is a timestamp in the shape of the date and the time. This will allow me to determine which new pages, amended pages, images etc have been added or changed in Comics UK since you last hit the 'Checkpoint Button' on the main page.

I hope this has put your mind at ease and you now feel safe from the Cookie Monster!!!!!
