Funny Folks #720 from 1888Welcome to Comics UK. If you like your comic literature British, then this site is just for you. It will attempt to list and detail as many British comics, that there have been published since Funny Folks (the first British comic) hit the shops, back in 1874.

There have been close on 2000 separate publications since Funny Folks. Many of them were just ‘one-hit wonders’, but a lot produced household titles like The Beano, Dandy and 2000AD. The characters also became well known. Most people have heard of Dan Dare, Roy Of The Rovers and Billy Bunter. On this site, I aim to list as many of them as possible.

Because of the sheer magnitude of the project, the site will constantly be expanded
upon over the coming weeks/months/years as extra titles,  features, characters, publishers, artists and writers are added. So if you want to see a  reference to one of these, and it isn't already here, then E:Mail a request to me and I'll attempt to push it towards the front of the queue. The Current Undertakings page will keep you up to date with developments at Comics UK. If you are keen to see the front covers of some of those bygone comics, then peruse the 862 images in the Gallery, you will not be disappointed. If it's annuals that interest you, then look no further than the Annuals section. There are currently 3233 on display. So if you're unsure of the year of that undated Beano, Dandy or Rupert annual, you will find the answer here.

Other sections which you may like to visit from time to time is the Forum and the Links page. The Forum allows you to pose questions, enter requests (like, "Has anyone got issue #459 of Beano they are willing to sell?"), reminisce, in fact, anything British comic or story paper related. The links page has some great links to other British comic or story paper related sites which I have come across. They are well worth a visit. If you've ever wondered just what happened to a certain publication, the Family Tree section will reveal all. Just select the publication title and press OK to see which titles it incorporated and which title subsequently incorporated it. In its early stages at the moment (10/4/2004) is the Characters Section, which is attempting to give a very brief overview of as many characters from the comics throughout history. One more very important section is the Checkpoint Area. This section allows you to catch up on anything within the site which has been updated or added since your last visit. Saves a lot of trawling through the site.

Although I do have my own references to British comic information, there will inevitably be occasions when I'll get something wrong. Be it a story name, date, character description, bad link, missing image or even a typo. If it's erroneous, then please tell me via the About Me page. I need to know.

As an aside, I am always on the lookout for more sources of information. I  know there are many people out there who possess a wealth of information on the subject of British comics and story papers (far more than me), but are a little hesitant in coming forward. All information is welcome, either by direct Email via the About Me page or through the Forum. If you want to forward details about anything comic related, large or small, then please do so. It could range from the dates a story ran from, to a précis of an artist, writer or story. Most importantly, I want to hear of your comic-related memories.

My immediate memory is returning home from my paper round with a handful of comics, which I received at 'staff discount', courtesy of my kind boss, Mr. Macefield in Hackney. I walked into the kitchen, put the comics on the table, went to the hallway to take off my coat and returned to find my Mum fully engrossed with Battle Picture Weekly. To cap it all, she wouldn't let me read any of the other comics until she had read them first. She said that I might tell her the outcome of a story. She'd let me read Krazy though. It was a bit too modern for her.

Above all, I am a British comic enthusiast, relaying information to people interested in the subject. My intention is to build up as large a reference database on British comics as possible, and if you want to know why I got started on this web site, click here.

So peruse and enjoy the pages from the options in the drop-down menu above, and take a trip down memory lane........

Al.
