Re: 2024 Annual previews
According to DC Thomson’s webshop (back for Christmas only) that’s correct. I suspect it’s a case of Beano and Dandy annuals sell more and therefore the softcover book needs a higher profit per copy sold. The My Weekly book, the Fireside Book and the Frienship Book are also all the same price - they...

Re: 2024 Annual previews
They won’t be on the DC Thomson shop this year, because it’s ceased to exist (how shortsighted), so I think Amazon is now the official way to get them.

Re: David Sutherland
I was at the funeral on Tuesday - it was primarily family and friends, with many present and former Beano and Dandy staff who had written for him. There was a collage of photographs, and every single one of David as an adult had the same sparkly smile. Apparently the only time he was grumpy on camer...

Re: The unofficial history of the Beano
My only complaints are that its not very critical of the Beano except a couple times. Including the artwork of the short lived Gordon Gnome story and the first series of the 2009 dennis cartoon. I feel kind of sorry for that artist. he's the only one the book criticises. The main reason why it isn’...

Re: Who created Black Bob?
That Dennis story was reprinted in the 1970 DtM book.
The story on their Facebook page doesn’t add up. Prout would have been commissioned directly by DC Thomson, and the script editing would have been done by Dandy staff before being sent to Prout.
I’d want to see more information.

Re: What comics did you buy today?
I'm afraid this was not even this week, but my most recent comics buy was 17 copies of Best of Whizzer and Chips Monthly from 1987 to 1989. Great fun reading.

The unofficial history of the Beano
Iain McLaughlin, who worked for DC Thomson for many years, including a spell as Editor, has now published his unofficial history of the Beano. Very strongly recommended.

His work for the Phoenix confirms how great a storyteller Jamie is. His artwork is really good if you allow yourself to look at the skill with which he lays it out, the perspectives, and actually look at that greenery.

Re: Don't call me Fatty, the name's Freddy!
Brave British soldiers outwit and outfight foreigners every fortnight in Commando. The question the Beano had to answer is whether it was ever right to have derogatory nicknames in the first place, and common decency says… no, actually, it never was. Forget “woke” and “PC”. They’re just labels peopl...

Re: Can anyone please identify this eighties strip?
Store Wars started on 5 September 1981, but I can't say what date. Wikipedia is for once definitive with what information it holds, mainly because I wrote most of it, but a little further information: Niblet's blog fills in everything else. Doug Jensen drew it for two or three years, before Jim Wats...

Re: What comics did you buy today?
On the way to the ferry today, I stopped as I so often do in Wigtown. In one of the smaller shops, I picked up the Beezer Books from 1968, 1969, 1970, 1972 and 1973, all from the one collection. £30 for the lot. I could have had 1974 as well, but I’m pretty sure I already have it. Cracking stuff, in...

Re: Our Colin (aka colcool007)
The Commando team have used much of the space that QM usually spends outlining the next four issues with a tribute to Colin. Colin I think would be a little bemused to have found himself taking up the lion’s share of the blurb space, QM’s only other news being the regular plug for the art of Colin’s...

The Kids did have names in the Rover (?) text stories, such as Danny “Death’s Head” Morgan. Smiffy’s real surname is Smith.

Re: Our Colin (aka colcool007)
Colin was very close to a complete set of unique Commando stories. I’m not quite sure whether he got there, but it was very close - of course, he aspired to a complete set of Commando issues, including reprints.
Another of the kind people in comics gone.
