Re: John Canning - Dr Who artist 1960s-70s
His early illustrations are very good, but they don't have a strong personal style. Having to draw quickly for TV Comic pushed him into a style that looked fast and exciting, and uniquely John Canning. I guess he thought it looked too sloppy, but I admire artists who can get things just right in rus...

Re: What comics did you buy today?
Calling All Girls, issue 35, December 1944. This is an American magazine for thirteen year olds with a large colour comic strip section of inspirational war stories. As you might expect, the combat takes place off stage.

Re: The Viz Parodies
Bully Beef out of the Dandy is probably the inspiration for Biffa, with a bit of Dennis vs. Walter in some of the strips. Mutha and Fatha are completely Viz, though.
Who does Drunken Bakers? I hated it at first, but now I've completely changed my mind. It's up there with Samuel Beckett!

Re: What comics did you buy today?
Ditto. I want comics that can be read without disintegrating, I don't care much what they look like sealed up in a plastic bag.

Re: What comics did you buy today?
It's been an up and down week for me. On Wednesday I found an Xmas 1937 Funny Wonder in quite good shape, not something I needed but nice to have. Then on Friday Whizzer and Chips No.2 arrived, a comic I've been after for ages, and it fell apart in my hands! Very disappointing. Not only is the paper...

Re: Police Boxes
From a 1961 Dandy, yer actual Broughty Ferry police box with the air raid siren on top. I've been strolling around the town in Google Street View whilst recovering from the flu, and I'm fairly sure the box stood on the corner of Forthill Rd and Cedar Rd about a quarter mile north of the main street....

Re: Phoenix's Future Plans
Although I smoked most of a packet of filter cigarettes on a boring interstate train journey in 1977, I never felt inclined to try them again. Which is lucky, really. Can't do without my six cups of tea though!

Re: Phoenix's Future Plans
Well there seems to be a jacket made out of cigarette smoke, a tie that's too short, a motorbike with no footrests, and a guitar being played the wrong way round, but no discernible purpose to the whole. Surely it isn't just a trite message like 'Our cigarettes are different'. What am I missing, Su...

No, Y-Man was the one who used to fly around in his underpants. She'd be an XX-Man.

Re: Australian comics
A sidelight on The Panther. Paul Wheelahan, who wrote and drew the original series, has just received a Ledger Award for his contribution to Australian comics. The bio here says that after the Panther folded he became a television writer, and he is currently writing Westerns for Black Horse under va...

Re: Leap Into The Future
Thanks, Phil, that's the one. My school library had WOW, and the main reason I remember this is because I had no idea what "enzymes" were. Something like LSD, maybe? I'm actually surprised that time travel via drugs was still considered a suitable subject for juvenile fiction in 1970!

Leap Into The Future
Any info on this strip, which was drawn by Gerry Wood and published in World Of Wonder? Was it a science fiction serial?

Re: Leo Baxendale
It was years before I realised that Bash Street was being drawn by another artist! Sutherland's style is almost identical to the Wham-era Baxendale, but it's just slightly more simple and consistent. I've seen Baxendale art that's so elaborate that it's hard to read at newsprint quality. Tom Paterso...
