World Cup comics?

Post by Richard S. »

You may have noticed that the World Cup has started! I was wondering if people know of any world / european cup comics? Marvel UK produced one for Spain 82 but are there any others?

I vaguely remember the TV cartoon for the 1982 World Cup and the CG series for the 2002 one but I don't know of any comics related to the World Cup as such.

It seems there has been a comic strip featuring the mascot for the 2010 SA World Cup:

There was a strip in TV Comic in 1966, featuring World Cup Willie, the mascot of England 66.

Well, Tiger and Roy of the Rovers used to feature World Cup related stories during their runs. In fact, the last time around there was a book collecting several of these - but it was released without much fanfare (not that the other two collections, from the 70's and 80's, got much either). It featured the story that ran over the 1966 World Cup (in Tiger and Hurricane), where Roy is stuck in Australia, but on a ranch near many communities of football-loving foreigners, so they just have their own World Cup down under!

There were certainly WC strips in Tiger and Roy of the Rovers (see link below) but I cant recall many specific strips following the WC in a strip from start to finish (other than the one page historical/factual strips that appeared in the in the Tiger in the 70s etc) and a World Cup Willie (England 1966) strip the appeared in TV COMIC (see link)- In Scotland cartoonist Malky McCormack used to do some amazing strips / caricatures of Scotland of the World Cup (mind you that strip would only have lasted 2 weeks as despite qualifying for fun in the 70s- 90s we managed to mess it up everytime) can't see much of his art on-line but a link to his half page "The Big Yin" (Billy Connolly) Sunday strip that appeared in the Sunday Mail is below (looks like a rough layout ofae his cartoons are stunning) I would imagine Striker may have had a WC strip.
