Sun comic 1949 and Roy Davis

Post by doncox »

I wonder if anyone can help here.

Some time around 1949 (maybe 1948 and/or 1950) the artist Roy Davis did a strip in the Sun comic about Romans fighting Ancient Britons.

Does anyone have a copy of such a comic, or know what dates the strip appeared ?

Ideally I would be looking for originals or possibly good scans.

Off the top of my head, I haven't a clue but I know where to look and I've checked through the available issues for '48; '49' '50 and not a sign of the story. Cetainly, I can only access an incomplete list of scans, so it might be there. Although, the stories in SUN seemed to last quite a few weeks. I hope some of the experts on this site will come up with an answer, 'cos I'm stuck. Sorry.

I'd guess the series you're thinking of was 55BC which ran in Sun from 10/6/50 to 16/9/50. It was followed by various other Davis strips with a historical setting including Alfred the Great, Ethelred the Unready and 1066.

Thanks for showing that, Phil. I'd heard of 55 B.C. but had never seen one before.

In the late 1980s Roy Davis supplied the scripts for a while for The Vampire Brats strip that I drew for Buster. Instead of typing out the scripts he sketched them out on A3 paper. Only roughly, as it was only a guide for me, but it was still in his distinct art style. He did quite a lot of stories for Fleetway this way. The roughs had to be returned with the finished artwork because the letterer needed to see the dialogue. I'd guess they were thrown away after that, which is a shame.

Many thanks for the very helpful replies.

55BC is indeed the strip I was trying to remember, and that example looks very familiar.

Now that I know the dates I can look for scans. Somebody kindly pointed me to Comic Book +.
