A long shot I'm sure David, but do any of the fanzines you have ever cover the British boys or girls comics from the 60s and 70s eg to interview artists or writers at more or less the time they were working on Valiant, Lion, Jinty, Tammy, Misty?
jintycomic.wordpress.com/ Excellent and weird stories from the past - with amazing art to boot.

They tend to be very US-centric tbh, but I'll keep my eyes open, and let you know if I find anything :)

BEM #29

By Martin Lock - 1980
Cover by Mike McMahon

Features a VERY candid interview with 2000 AD editor Steve McManus and assistant editor Alan Grant (By the way, when did IPC start returning artwork?).

The whole zine is an enjoyable read, but everyone seems to be in a bad mood...

They were certainly returning it when I started freelancing for them in the mid-1980s. You had to ask for it though, and the editor told me that most Buster artists didn't want it back! How they (or their relatives) must be regretting that decision now! I don't think some artists envisioned there being a collectors market for their pages and thought they'd just take up space. It's very sad that they undervalued their own worth like that.

Thanks, Lew. The non return seemed like an unbreakable rule at the time of this interview, I wonder what forced the change.
I hope none of the artwork ended up being destroyed.

Your link doesn't appear to work and I haven't read the interviews so I don't know if they mention it there but around the early 1980s IPC charged 2000AD artists a fee per page if they wanted their art returned. They were outraged by this, as you can imagine. I don't know how long that continued but by the time I was receiving back my Oink and Buster pages there was no charge. The company even paid the postage. Every few months I'd get a parcel of pages sent back to me.

I fear many pages were destroyed unfortunately. By the early nineties editors were giving away pages to anyone who wanted them, and told me they'd be incinerated otherwise. All the publishers were interested in was storing copies on film for reprint purposes. They didn't need the big original pages taking up space. As you know, IPC sold off all their remaining pages several years ago to a collector.

Do I? I couldn't find it. Although 20 year old me wrote such rubbish back then that perhaps it's for the best that I don't remind myself.

At the ephmera fair yesterday at the Royal National I picked up three early fanzines including issues 3 and 3 of Comic Catalog. I presume they are from volume 1. Issue 2 is dated Dec. 1971 - Jan. 1972 and issue 3 is dated Feb-Mar 1972. The other fanzie was the first issue of World of Comics edited by Michael Hill and is dated Summer 1972. The Comic Catalogs have different fliers inside both advertising Dark They Were and Golden Eyed moving to Berwick Street ("the week before Christmas"). I paid £5 each for them.

That's a great find (and a very reasonable price), I'm very jealous. If you ever fancy putting them through a scanner I could offer the results a good home :D
