VR Troopers issue 1

Post by Richard S. »

Anyone know anything about this?

How many issue etc. it lasted?

This is issue 1 from Sep-95 (from Phoenix Press Ltd) - so it's an independently (i.e. not DC Thomson or Fleetway) produced boys adventure from the '90s - right up my collecting alley!

Contents nothig to write home about - there are no credits anywhere

I know it was an utterly terrible Power Rangers rip-off, with the exception that instead of giants fighting in cities they turned into computer programs and fought "in the computer", which looked like a city from Tron crossed with a giant circuit board. Considering they were supposed to be "stopping the virus" they didn't half smash up the computers internal workings a lot.

Also I'm sure the show was actually called VR Warriors, but it was a long time ago now.

It was terrible. An incoherent mess - but not in a good way, like the Ultraman films... :)

You're confusing VR Troopers with Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad. VR Troopers actually had a VR world which basically looked like a rock quarry, and the heroes were robots, not computer programs. The villain was a guy who turned into a monster called Grimlord when entering the VR world (whereas the heroes become robots). And it's not actually a Power Rangers rip-off - VR Troopers is from Saban, the makers of Power Rangers.

Beetleborgs was made by Saban as well, but Syber-Squad wasn't.

I have a later issue, I think no.6 or 7. When I get home I'll dig it out...

I preferred this over 'Power Rangers' as it was aimed at teenagers and had some fun moments. Great cast too (except the awful comedy relief ones whos names I can't remember...) :D

The comic relief characters were newspaper editor Woody, reporter Percy, and VRT leader Ryan's dog Jeb.

Hi Richard,

What I have is actually issue four of 'VR Troopers Official Episode Guide: Episodes 24-31'. There is no date, only a copyright of 1996, and it is also published by Phoenix Press so presumably it is the same publication? Again no credits but the name Phoenix Press rang a bell, and they were behind the appalling 'Official S.I.G./Supermarionation' magazine which came out for one thankfully sole issue in 1993.

Well the issue 1 is called VR Troopers Official 3D Comic, so what you have seems to be a spin-off, not the same title. Plus, the issue 1 is cover dated September 1995, so assuming it was monthly, issue 4 of that would be December 1995, not 1996.

Do you have a cover scan, and does it feature any comics? If the answer to the second question is no, that would confirm that it isn't the same publication.

You're right, it isn't. I looked at the thumbnail only & didn't think to enlarge it.

Also, I found issue 1 of the VR Troopers Episode Guide publication on eBay last night after posting (and after snapping it up  ). No strips, and it is more a magazine. Lots of nice colour photos but scant on text. I just like looking at Caitlin, actually...

If people are interested in the Episode Guide magazine when issue 1 arrives I'll post pics of both...

You can see a lot more of Kaitlin's actress Sarah Brown, as she's actually had quite a successful career, although she's not A-list. I hear that she's about to join US soap Days of Our Lives.

The episode guide magazine and comics would both be of interest to the folks at www.rangercrew.com - it's a Power Rangers message board. I've linked to this thread there already.

My brief experience of Phoenix Press is they did little if any new stuff (and what was 'new' was very poor - re: 'S.I.G.') so my gut instinct is the 3D comic must be a reprint - but from what? Was there an American VR Troopers comic?

Edit: Looks like this might have been one:

there's an ad in the back of the comic for issue 6 of the episode guide (episodes 61-72)

The contents are pretty ropey so I don't think it can be a reprint from the Marvel series

Digi - I can't see where to go to on www.rangercrew.com but if you can point me in the right direction I'll contribute over there as well
