Seeking info: Warlord strip featuring WW2 Japanese

Post by TokyoBill »

I'd read a strip which I believe May have been titled, "I...Samurai", a strip about a Japanese soldier, possibly ranked major, set during WWII and who was armed with a sword and would set about Japanese/samurai style justice amongst the corrupt within his own ranks.

I think I saw this strip in a Warlord annual circa 1982--I received various British comics from family in the UK at Christmastime especially the annuals, so I don't know if such a strip was a regular feature.

If anyone has any idea about what I'm talking about and can provide insight I'd appreciate it!

It's not in 79-81 or 83-85 or 87. Sounds more like a strip maybe Battle would have.

It's in the 1982 Warlord annual, titled simply "Samurai".

This was a one-off story. I know that Bill Graham and the other editors faced a lot of resistance when trying to add in a story with a central character that was a German hero let alone a Japanese one! This was a time when people still refused to buy Japanese cars or goods as they had either been in a Japanese POW camp or had a relative that had been in one.

If DCT ever produced anything remotely close to Charley's War, it was Warlord's Kampfgruppe Falken

Agreed. It was Alan Hemus' finest work.
And Bill recalls the fight that he had to get it in the comic.

Interestingly I have a nice page of original art by Mick 'Marvelman' Anglo featuring a WW2 German unit called the DHP. As it doesn't seem to have ever been published it may be that he ran into problems getting it accepted as well.

Quite by coincidence the latest Canary Wharf magazine has an article about the Samurai one of whom was six feet seven tall and died standing up in battle.

Incidentally, Battle also featured a series called Samurai in 1977.
