Brett Ewins Injured in Altercation with the Police

Some sad news. It's been reported in the Ealing Gazette, and since picked up by several comics sites, that 2000AD artist Brett Ewins is in hospital after suffering serious injuries in a struggle with Police in Hanwell on Saturday, during which a police officer was stabbed. It seems the police arrived in response to complaints of a disturbance in the street and found Brett carrying a knife, and the officer was hurt while trying to restrain him but was apparently released from hospital shortly afterward. The gazette describes Brett as having had a series of mental health issues over the years, and he is apparently still in hospital in a serious condition. The IPCC are investigating how he came to be injured.

Very sorry to hear that, and living proof that the talented and gifted are not immune to depression or other mental health problems.

Here's hoping that things improve soon for Mr Ewins.

An update on this: it seems Brett has now been pronounced fit to stand trial and was remanded into custody at Isleworth Crown Court on Thursday, charged with GBH. An investigation into the actions of the police is also being undertaken.

While I can appreciate the police have to defend themselves when subduing someone who appears violent and is armed with a knife, exactly how 'defensive' were they that Brett Ewins was rendered unconscious with a blow (or blows) to the head with a truncheon, and suffered broken ribs and a collapsed lung?



I hope the investigation does indeed reveal both sides of the story...
