Early Dave Gibbons

Post by Lew Stringer »

Not his earliest work as he'd been contributing to fanzines and comics for a few years by the time this saw print, but it pre-dates his work for 2000AD. Here's 'Year of the Shark Men' from The Wizard in 1976:

Thanks Ray. I've passed the info onto Dave in case he didn't have it,

I remember the Wriggling Wrecker as it must have been mentioned in a fanzine like Fantasy Advertiser, prompting me to buy the Wizard.

Ray, I have quoted you extensively in my latest blog article as I have wanted an excuse to put up the early Dave Gibbons stuff for a while. And as he is giving the Comics and Creativity talk at Dundee University, it seemed a perfect time to highlight the talk, look at his early work and show off the fact that I have a Wizard comic signed by Dave!

Don't know if anyone else is going to this, but the next day will have a really interesting event that I highly recommend if you can get to Dundee for it.

Thanks to the talk by Dave Gibbons yesterday, I've realised that I have missed at least two stories. One is Spring Heeled Jackson and the other is Nick Jolly which I never realised that Dave had done. Either that or I have read it and forgotten over the intervening years.

Colin, I have a few stories from both of those features and I hadn't realised Mr. Gibbons drew any of them. Do you know how many of each? Or was it just the odd example? And as there was a female version of Jackson - Spring Heeled Jill - did he have anything to do with that?

I remember he did one series of Spring Heeled Jackson. And I believe he did the set up series for Nick Jolly before it was given to Ron Smith.

As to Spring Heeled Jill? I have not got a clue. But if you can ping me a picture either on the thread or by email, then I can have a look and see if I can recognise the artist. Either way, I am really interested in looking at it.

Colin, the page is too big so I'll attach it to an email. Let me know if you want the full story, please.
