GEOCITIES IS CLOSING!!!!

Post by Peter Gray »

Dear Yahoo! UK & Ireland GeoCities customer,

We're writing to let you know that Yahoo! UK & Ireland GeoCities, our free web site building service and community, is closing on October 26, 2009.

We have enjoyed hosting web sites created by Yahoo! users all over the world, and we're proud of the community you've built. However, we have decided to focus on helping our customers explore and build relationships online in other ways.

On October 26, 2009, your GeoCities site will no longer appear on the Web, and you will no longer be able to access your GeoCities account and files.

What You Need to Do
If you're no longer using your web site, you don't need to do a thing, but if you'd like to move your web site, or save the images and other files you've posted online, you need to act now by downloading your files to your own computer.

To quickly download your published files and images, visit your GeoCities web site, right-click on each page, and choose Save Page As... from the menu that appears. Choose a location on your computer to save your files, then click OK or Save to save the HTML and images associated with your page. Learn more about downloading your files.

With your pages and images saved offline, you can re-create your site with any hosting provider you like, such as BT Web Hosting.

Please be aware that after October 26, your GeoCities files will be deleted from our servers, and will not be recoverable. If you'd like to save your files, you must download them now.

Another Way to Connect Online
As a Yahoo! customer, you can now use your Yahoo! profile as a central point to manage your identity, activities, and interests across Yahoo! and make it easy to connect and share with the people who matter to you most.

You can get started anytime by adding your picture and other personal details, then invite friends and family to connect — even start your own blog. You'll be able to follow the online activities of your connections across Yahoo!.

Setting up your profile is easy, and it's free! Visit your profile now.

Don't Wait
We encourage you to save your files now. If you need assistance, please visit the help centre.

We want to thank you for being a GeoCities customer, and hope you continue to enjoy our other Yahoo! UK & Ireland services.

Best regards,

The Yahoo! UK & Ireland GeoCities team

Peter, I can put you in touch with people who do (reasonably cheap) webhosting, and I can probably improve on your existing websites!

I used Geocities for my website initially. I found them very limiting.

Peter, if you want another free site, try Tripod. (http://www.tripod.lycos.com/)

Totally free, although they do carry advertising. I use them for my Brickman site:
http://brickmancomics.tripod.com/

and my old website:
http://lewcomix.tripod.com/

Another alternative is Mr.Site, which is about £35 or so for a year: http://www.mrsite.com/

I use it for my main site now:
http://www.lewstringer.com/ (Although I don't think it displays properly on some browsers such as Internet Explorer.)

Anyway, Andy might come up with some better solutions.

Lew

It's not that new Peter. I've had that site for a few years now. (I've just tweaked it a bit, realising I hadn't updated it for nearly a year!)

Clicking on the images makes them larger.

I have clicked on the images and they open up in a white square on a black background its just you can't read the text of the comic page and the image is still too small to see like Combat Colin..Brickman.. for examples..

Anyway I see your work large on your blog..
thanks for the helpful website link...may do that for my own website...and put the comic artist websites I've done on my blog...or a new blog..
so thanks Lew

What size monitor are you using? They seem legible enough on a 17" screen.

That's the largest the gallery pictures open I'm afraid. The idea is just to give examples of my style etc for potential editors and clients. The Combat Colin and Brickman pages in Gallery one are a bit small but I'm sure you'll find the other 25 images easy to see. (Most don't feature dialogue anyway.)

Nice seeing the Fun-tastic comic with all the fun characters
love the crowd scenes..
also like the torn page gag on Lucky bag..love the surprised look..
like the mini marvels :)
the Viz bumper special looks like a summer special..and based on Buster and Monster Fun Gums..

You are right its only the two I mentioned that you can't read the text..

I don't recommend Tripod. I can't recieve email notifications from them, as for some reason, I couldn't change my email address, from the defunct Talk21 provider, to my later Lycos Mail address (also now defunct), or to my current Googlemail address. That's why I set up webspace with http://www.007sites.com (advertising is a banner at the top and bottom of the page, which you'll see by clicking the link in my sig) - only to find that my Googlemail account can also provide webspace! I'm transfering over my geocities website over to a new blog..

http://uk.geocities.com/pjgcartoons (this is called www.pgcartoons.co.uk)
to...
http://petergraycartoons.blogspot.com/

Do I have to save pictures first to my computer than upload to the blog which takes longer...

or can I just copy pictures and paste on to the blog from the link..
It seems to work and would save me a lot of time..I copied it to the blog post like this-

Or add an image from the web
Add another image

URL

Learn more about using web images

<a href="http://uk.geocities.com/pjgcartoons/PGj ... .jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 357px; height: 469px;" src="http://uk.geocities.com/pjgcartoons/PGj ... rthday.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a>which comes out like this..
as an experiment I deleted the picture on my website and the picture was still working..

So does copying from a website on to a blog make a copy ...so when the website disapears it will still shows the pictures..

I'm duty bound to point you in the direction of where the Buster site is hosted: www.mcoms.net

£2.50 a month for a site, although Buster uses more space so is a fiver a month, but still good value and worth checking out!

I know the webring service was also offering a transfer from Geocities.....I'll try and dig out the details for you.

Incidently, I too got that e-mail from Geocities....it left me very confused as I didn't think I had a website there until I logged in and discovered my first foray into web-building made back in 2002 - couldn't believe it was still there

The bottom image (which I'm putting in this post) on your blog doesn't show up (I'm seeing a red X) and it needs moving as it's still on the Geocities domain.
Image
I've checked the properties of each, and the first two are on Imageshack, the bottom five on Geocities, those all need copying to your Imageshack webspace. Clearly you need to download to your PC and re-upload from there. Looks like you're going to be very busy...

This is a nightmare! October isn't long...
23 websites..loads of pages..images..text..

I will transfer all of it or most of it to various blogs..
a blog for my cartoons
a blog for the UK comic cartoonist geocites website
Terry Brave | Tom Patterson | Ken Reid | JEO | Trevor Metcalfe | Steve Bright | Reg Parlett | Leo Baxendale | Brian Walker | John Geering | Bill Ritchie | Mike Lacey | Robert Nixon | The Weird and Wonderful of the Comic World | And a Whole Site Dedicated to JEO's Mastermind
etc..there are other ones..
a blog for my Dads paintings (maybe later his drawings)
a blog for the Mr Men

and my cartoons and comics blog will continue with my latest cartoons and Uk comic images..etc..

phew!

I prefer blogs to websites has you don't have to design the page and fiddle around with the HTML..
so thanks everyone for the various websites I could join..though I'm sticking to the blog idea..
Also now I know I have to save them to a computer and then upload them..so thanks Digifiend..

e.g
Birthday cards
Easter Cards
Cartoon Cards
Christmas Cards

Will look good when it is done..
