I think Shiver and Shake would be a good choice: it was short lived, so it should be easier to cover than some of the longer running titles. Also, it's unjustly rather obscure; a very likeable comic that deserves some attention!

Nice new feature on Cor!!'s excellently illustrated (by Joe Colquhoun) The Goodies strip on Kazoop now.

It is from the gallery of portraits by my all-times favourite American comics artist Don Martin of MAD fame. Here are more by him:

Funnily enough I've always seen Don Martin as a kind of US equivalent of Ken Reid. While Basil Wolverton also had the same fascination for comic grotesques it seems to me that Martin was the only American who could really match Reid's depiction of absurdly over-the-top comic violence. While nobody would be likely to confuse their styles it's easy to see them as kindred spirits. Take this two page sequence featuring a young Captain Klutz for example: it's just the sort of excruciating humour that Reid revelled in - and it even leads on to a failed suicide attempt that would have been right up his street!

Of course, I doubt if British publications like Beano or Wham! would have ever come to Don Martin's attention in the USA, so it's highly unlikely that Ken's work had any direct influence on him. However, Mad was widely available in the UK during the 1960s and 1970s, so it seems quite probable that at some point Ken would have taken a professional interest in the contributions of their 'Maddest Artist'!

In fact, given that Dez Skinn was a self-confessed admirer of Ken Reid who'd worked closely with him at IPC, I can't help wondering whether he ever thought about getting Ken to provide some original covers for the British edition of Mad when he subsequently took over as editor (and even if Reid had already passed away by then it'd be fascinating to know whether he ever mentioned Don Martin to Dez during their Buster days).

I'm not sure about Ken, but Leo Baxendale surely had, as can be seen from this drawing in Willy the Kid Book No. 2. The bloke on the right is pure Don Martin. Having been ghosted on a massive scale, Leo probably saw no harm in imitating another artist's style himself...

I have now started covering Shiver and Shake and ran into a technical problem: I believe my most recent post is not showing up in Goggle search. All other posts seem to be showing up fine. I posted my question on Google Groups but got no reply so far. Would anyone here know what the problem might be and how to fix it? The link to the blog is below:

If you search the title of the blog and click on images it comes up, but not on the main page, which is weird...

I tried reposting a few days ago but nothing changed. Maybe the post has too many illustrations?.. I’ll see what happens when I post the next one in a day or two.

As for my collecting aims at the moment, I have scaled down the collecting hobby, mainly because my collection is nearing saturation point. I intend to focus on completing the full set of Buster – with 16 issues missing and 7 needing upgrading, I am not that far away. Also I hope to complete full runs of the Dandy with Ali Ha Ha and Big Head and Thick Head by Ken Reid from the 60s (I am only missing one issue in both series!!), and Laughing Planet and Hyde and Shriek by Tom Paterson from the early 90s. Also wouldn’t mind completing my set of Giggle, but that’s a really tough one!

Good luck with your effort on The Beano from 1958 – 1964, Peter. It took me quite a while to put the run together!

As part of my effort to cover every strip that appeared in SHIVER AND SHAKE, I have now posted part one of SCREAM INN review on my blog. Here is the link for those of you who might be interested: http://kazoop.blogspot.com/2013/03/a-lo ... m-inn.html

I covered Frankie Stein not so long ago: http://kazoop.blogspot.com/2013/03/a-lo ... trips.html

I got that Brian Walker's piece though a private transaction but most of artwork in my collection came from eBay and Compal (not that I have a lot of it...)

Speaking of original artwork I just stumbled across this joke page that I must have picked up in a cheap job lot a couple of years ago. It's from the 1983 Buster & Monster Fun Special rather than Shiver & Shake but the style seems quite similar. Does anyone want to hazard a guess as to who the artist is?
