100th anniversary issue out now!

Discuss all the girls comics that have appeared over the years. Excellent titles like Bunty, Misty, Spellbound, Tammy and June, amongst many others, can all be remembered here.

100th anniversary issue out now!

Post by stevezodiac »

This caught my eye as I wandered into Tescos on the way home from work. I collect vintage magazines so couldn't resist this. The magazine itself has lots of nostalgic items throughout as well as four pages of vintage cover repros. The reproduction first issue has 36 pages and two covers (as was usual in those days) and the second cover has a six panel strip. There is also a children's story inside illustrated with three comic style panels. Well worth the mere £1.25 cover price.

Hmm, that should say No. 1 of a New Paper. I hope grammatical standards have improved since then.

If the first issue was Volume 1 Number 1, I suppose the current issue is Volume 101 Number 43 (based on a new volume at the start of each year)? Of course, they stopped numbering them decades ago.

Interesting that this week's Radio Times also has a small supplement containing reproductions of a number of old covers - including the first ever television issue.

That will be due to it being the 75th Anniversary of the first BBC TV broadcast of the 405 line service, which lasted until 1985.

As to the Woman's Weekly, I will have a look-out next time I go down to the shops.

Also, if you see the short Jock on Sunday, be sure to say hello Steve. :D
I started to say something sensible but my parents took over my brain!

I admit i have not noticed that many Womens Weekly covers before , i will say though , that one is an eye catcher.

In respect to kicking the cat ,have a look at Alley Cat he eventually came out on top! :)

Is there a comic fair on Sunday? In London? I like the alley cat artwork - who drew it? I was a also a big fan of the original Harry's Hippo artist can anyone give his name?

Just googled it and answered my own question (comic mart that is). I'll have to rearrange my diary...

Saturday 5th November: Watch score on bbc 301 and see Millwall get hatful of goals away to Blackpool after their fluke five nil win at Leeds.

Sunday 6th November: Blank
Now: Going to comic mart - yahoo!

Monday 7th November: Wake up, yawn, eat Shreddies, put on trousers and go to work.
5pm put trousers in reverse and go home again.

Ken Harrison, or did someone draw it before him?
Is it weird to have no interest in keeping or collecting free gifts?

It can't be the artist I'm thinking of as I know Ken's style. This artist also drew a Me and My Shadow type strip I think in Buzz? Unless Ken's style was very different when he first started.

Yeah, the style in question is more like his Robbie Rebel and Minnie the Minx, with cartoony eyes, rather than the more realistic Dudley Watkins style used on Desperate Dan (before 2004) and Lord Snooty.

There was another artist, but as far as I know, Ken started it.

Rob Lee drew Alley cat..which comic was this from Matrix?

Rob Lee had the Robert Nixon style..which first came from the brilliant artist of Pitch and Toss..Roy Wilson
