Information on "They Call Me a Coward!"

Discuss all the girls comics that have appeared over the years. Excellent titles like Bunty, Misty, Spellbound, Tammy and June, amongst many others, can all be remembered here.

Information on "They Call Me a Coward!"

Post by Tammyfan »

I would like to have some information on "They Call Me a Coward!", which ran in June and School Friend 3 July to 28 August 1971. Any synopsis, any scans if possible, the conclusion of the story.

I checked on 30th Century Comics and it looks like they don't have the issues.

Any help welcome. Thank you.

I have just this afternoon driven back from a very enjoyable but busy four-week holiday in Cornwall, a week of which was spent in London, (over five hours each way on the train!) so I am tired. I've been catching up with the forum in the last hour or so, and I find that by some miracle I have three instalments of ''They Call Me A Coward!'', those for 7 August, 14 August, and 28 August. As I need to chill out this evening, rather than getting straight down to further work on Bunty, I will post the scans of all three instalments for you, Briony. Back shortly with the three posts after feeding the inner man.

Thank you, Phoenix. I just spotted one of the issues on ebay, so I think I'll have a go for it.

Update: secured it. It's part 1.

I've got the papers out, Briony. They are sitting on my scanner. I'll have to do the scans tomorrow morning though. I'm cream crackered so an early night and a late morning are called for.

Thank you, Phoenix. With some persistence I guess I can find the other episodes.

I do recall something like this happening to the Four Marys in the Picture Library "Four Against the School". The Four Marys are accused of cowardice (turns out they were framed) and St Elmo's goes on strike demanding their expulsion.

Yes, I've got that one too. I don't know how you feel about it but I get disappointed and a bit irritated when the original artist, or a decent stand-in, isn't used for later illustrations when the readers already have a clear picture of the girls in their head. The four portrayed on the cover below don't look remotely like the Four Marys, apart perhaps from Raddy's hair, and even that isn't really correct.

The teachers and headmistress in "They Call Me a Coward!" look like a wise lot. I am so impressed the headmistress took a non-judgemental approach with Cathy.

Yes, that is refreshing to see! Nice artwork too, I must say.
jintycomic.wordpress.com/ Excellent and weird stories from the past - with amazing art to boot.

The art looks as though it could be by Leslie Otway.

I wondered where Otway went after "Alona" in Princess Tina. Thanks for sharing

Part 1 has just arrived. If anyone can help with parts 2-5 and 8, that would be great.
