Identificating artists from DC Thomson comics
Hi everyone !
I am organising an exhibition including a fair amount of pages from girls' comics, I am looking for information on the artists, writers or editors. I identified some of them, but I still have some left, any help would be greatly appreciated
Here are the comics for which I have no information yet:
From Judy:
- Educated Edith
From Emma:
- The Emma report (I think this story is called "The Lost Child", if that's of any help)
- Holly of Hazard Unit
- Molly and her Millettes
- Skate Cat Kate
- Sue Spiker
From Bunty:
- Ernie's girl
- Lorna Drake
From Mandy:
- The Oldest Schoolgirl
- The Secret Nurse
- The Troubles of Tessa
- Wedding of the Week
- Looking after Lester (I don't know from which magazine, unfortunately)
Thanks a lot, have a nice day !

Re: Identificating artists from DC Thomson comics
Lous, do you have specific examples of each as many strips could end up with several artists working on that strip either over a very short period or different artists depending on when it was published.
For example, Invasion ran for the first year of 2000AD and yet it had seven different artists in the first ten issues (Blasco, Wright, Sarompas, Kennedy, Dorey, Pino and Bradbury)

I started to say something sensible but my parents took over my brain!

I know Maureen Hartley wrote Wedding of the Week. Don't know the artist.
Re: Identificating artists from DC Thomson comics
Sue Spiker and I believe the Secret Nurse are the same artist I believe and Jinty website nicknamed the artist Merry as he/she is not known

Samples of other artists:
Wedding of the Week
Lorna Drake (possibly Tony Thewenetti?)
Skate-Cat Kate
Ernie's Girl
Not one that has been asked about but I've wondered does anyone know the artist that did Bunty's Haunted Hotel and a lot of other light hearted stories.

The Lorna Drake artist is Tony Thewenetti (David Roach told me).

This was the artist that also did the Corn Cobb stories in the boys' papers. I will need to see if I can find an example for youpeace355 wrote: Not one that has been asked about but I've wondered does anyone know the artist that did Bunty's Haunted Hotel and a lot of other light hearted stories.

Hi peace 355 and Col.
The Haunted Hotel/Corn Cobb artist was Wilf Street.

Thanks Kashgar! That's been an artist I've been hoping to identify for ages, he has very distinct style.

Agreed that Sue Spiker is the unknown 'Merry' artist who David Roach and others have been seeking a name for for a very long time.peace355 wrote:Sue Spiker and I believe the Secret Nurse are the same artist I believe and Jinty website nicknamed the artist Merry as he/she is not known

jintycomic.wordpress.com/ Excellent and weird stories from the past - with amazing art to boot.

Re: Identificating artists from DC Thomson comics
Now, if only we could identify that "Merry" artist...
Re: Identificating artists from DC Thomson comics
...Unfortunately as Comixminx says that one even has David Roach stumped! It's rather surprising in that 'Merry' was quite prolific as well as having a clearly recognizable style.

Maybe a relative will come forward with information. It's happened before.philcom55 wrote:...Unfortunately as Comixminx says that one even has David Roach stumped! It's rather surprising in that 'Merry' was quite prolific as well as having a clearly recognizable style.

Thank you so much for all of your answers, this is great !
Here are abstracts and more information about the period, as you were saying colcool007
Educated Edith, from Judy:
I am not sure what the date is for this one, but here is a picture of the page I was interested in (sorry for the quality)
The Emma Report, from Emma:
Holly of the Hazard Unit, from Emma - a page from December 1978:
Looks like I can't attach more files, so I will continue in the next post
