Non-White Protagonists

Discuss all the girls comics that have appeared over the years. Excellent titles like Bunty, Misty, Spellbound, Tammy and June, amongst many others, can all be remembered here.

"The Sentinels" from Misty has some blacks in the crowds that gather around the problem Sentinel. There are no black protagonists, which is just as well because the Sentinel had a portal into an alternate world where the Nazis won. That would have been an extremely dangerous thing for non-whites to encounter.

It seems in later years there was a better mix in background characters. There was a black girl in The Four Marys a lot, I can't recall if she was named.

There are a couple of non-whites among the antagonists (henchmen) in Girl II's Slaves of the Nightmare Factory, discussed at https://jintycomic.wordpress.com/2017/0 ... y-1983-84/. A regular is a black guy, and an Indian/Pakistani type makes a brief appearance.

The Button Box from Tammy used non-whites in some stories.

Have you ever noticed that most black antagonists in girls' comics are African witch doctors?

Am not surprised to hear it - it's a stereotype that gets a lot of outings! Scooby Doo made lots of use it too.
jintycomic.wordpress.com/ Excellent and weird stories from the past - with amazing art to boot.

One nice exception to this is Life's a Ball for Nadine, where the two antagonists who try to put Nadine out of the disco and netball matches are also black.

"Marie's Mission" from Judy is set in India, so there would be a lot of Indian people in it.

The dusky-skinned 'Rozana, Schoolgirl of Mystery' (and her baby elephant!) was the cover star of School Friend for a time during 1958.

I see from the sneak preview of the Scream & Misty Halloween special at http://downthetubes.net/?p=40880 that the protagonists in "Return of the Sentinels" are coloured people. I just hope if they do go off into that parallel world where Hitler won, they get back ok. Nazis do not take kindly to coloured people...

Cybela and The Survivors were drawn by the same artist. Does anybody know who he/she was?

Sorry, the identity of this artist remains elusive.

But for non-whites and Jews, even more so. Nazis are racists.
