Tom Paterson drawing Sweeny Toddler in Shiver and Shake!?
http://petergraycartoonsandcomics.blogs ... r-and.html
I might be wrong But all the ones I've put up on the blog look like Tom Paterson to me..
Could someone show me a Leo Baxendale Sweeny Toddler from Shiver and Shake on here..
Leo's later style is very hard to work out if he drew it or another artist..
it all started from Wham..Smash..in the 60's

Re: Tom Paterson drawing Sweeny Toddler in Shiver and Shake!?
Peter, as I posted on your blog yesterday: Leo B. stopped drawing Sweeney in May 1975, so that's all the Shiver and Shake ones, and about the first nine months of the Whoopee merger drawn - some full page, later half page - by him.
He confirms this in his autobiography.
I suppose it's possible there may have been the odd ghosted strip, though he seems to indicate otherwise.

I did the post for you Raven...
It just doesn't look like Leo's work..see at the blog post
the ones Leo drew in Whoopee were signed so easier to tell..
Mind you it could show how much Tom drew in Leo's style..

Re: Tom Paterson drawing Sweeny Toddler in Shiver and Shake!?
Leo B. goes into quite some detail about what he drew when in his book, and which strips he dropped and when, as he finally decided to focus full time on the Badtime Bedtime Books for Monster Fun before leaving comics. He says he drew one final Sweeney strip after announcing he was quitting the strip at the end of April 75 to give the editor the chance to find a replacement artist.
Tom Paterson appropriated his style of the time when Leo moved on.

As Raven said, chances are those Shiver and Shake pages are by Leo. Unless Tom or Leo comment I doubt we'll know for sure.

Actually it started when Leo left Thomsons and Dave Sutherland ghosted his Sixties style perfectly on Bash Street Kids.Peter Gray wrote: Leo's later style is very hard to work out if he drew it or another artist..

I'd go by Leo's own words, Peter - I'm sure he knew what he did, and his autobiography was written only a few years after doing those strips (it came out in 1978). They all look like his work to me.

So it looks like they are Leo's work...thanks for the info and help.
Re: Tom Paterson drawing Sweeny Toddler in Shiver and Shake!?
It's interesting to look at some of Tom Paterson's work from that 1973-74 period; I'd have to check but I think it doesn't tend to look at all like Leo's in some instances. Didn't he do Clever Dick and Dozy Mick for early Whoopee?
I think that may have been him doing Grimley Feendish for Shiver and Shake, though; perhaps the first Baxendale character he took on, and his first appropriation of a Baxendale style ... ?

Leo Baxendale's later work
Now my eye is more tuned in..I've really enjoyed reading his work in late 60's early 70's Buster.
Love The Pirates two pager..only have one example 1966.
Clever Dick is great with all the levers and pullies..
Big Chief Pow Wow is like a nice follow on from Little Plumk and The Three Bears..love that strip..love to get hold of some more of these..
Mervyn's Monsters is wonderful.I like how each monster moves differently..
Nellyphant is a nice short strip..
On my cover of Buster and Cor!! is Snooper with all his gadgets helping him to see everyone.this is April 12th 1975.
Though the Snooper in 20th March 1976 looks different..though still good..
I'll put scan up..according to Buster website its Martin Baxendale..

its a nice one about meeting the artists..
If it is Martin its quite nice that the Son follow on after the Father..
Re: Tom Paterson drawing Sweeny Toddler in Shiver and Shake!?
Peter, on your ukcomicsartists blog, on the Leo Baxendale Grimly Feendish and Eagle-Eye page, the black and white Grimly Feendish example is NOT by Leo.

I see I'm not the only one who has trouble telling the difference between Tom Paterson's work and Leo Baxendale's later work.Peter Gray wrote:I might be wrong But all the ones I've put up on the blog look like Tom Paterson to me..

You're right Nigel. It's by Stan McMurtry who drew lots of material for Odhams, including numerous Grimly Feedish and Percy's Pets pages.NP wrote:Peter, on your ukcomicsartists blog, on the Leo Baxendale Grimly Feendish and Eagle-Eye page, the black and white Grimly Feendish example is NOT by Leo.
Peter, Leo signed most of his Odhams pages, so always look for a signature.
Incidentally, sorry to pick another fault Peter but Ken Reid did not draw Laser Eraser! Those pages on your site are by Robert Nixon and are even signed by him:

Time for you to use the embarrassed emoticon I'm afraid Peter.
