Roy of the Rovers - Missing Weeks

Post by Earl »

Does anyone have a list of weeks when Roy of the Rovers was not published due to strikes etc. I am especially interested in the 1978 to 1984 era.

25 September 1976 - 20 March 1993 853

001. 25/9/76
053. 24/9/77
105. 23/9/78
157. 22/9/79
209. 20/9/80
261. 19/9/81
313. 18/9/82
365. 17/9/83
417. 15/9/84
469. 14/9/85
521. 13/9/86
573. 12/9/87
625. 10/9/88
677. 9/9/89
729. 8/9/90
781. 7/9/91
833. 5/9/92
834. 12/9/92
835. 19/9/92
836. 26/9/92
837. 3/10/92
838. 10/10/92
839. 17/10/92
840. 24/10/92
841. 31/10/92
842. 7/11/92
843. 14/11/92
844. 21/11/92
845. 28/11/92
846. 5/12/92
847. 12/12/92
848. 19/12/92
849. 26/12/92
850. 2/1/93
851. 9/1/93
852. 16/1/93
853. 23/1/93
>>> 30/1/93
>>> 6/2/93
>>> 13/2/93
>>> 20/2/93

Right, looks like 8 issues were lost to strike action, as 20/3/93 should've been issue 861 according to my calculations. Now we just need to work out when that strike was.
EDIT: Hmm, there were a few, and not all comics were affected each time. This narrows it down anyway: http://www.comicsuk.co.uk/forum/viewtop ... f=4&t=2123

Thanks for the input.

There are no missing weeks in 1976 as I have all those issues. I don't think there are any missing weeks in 1977 as I either have the issues or have seen copies on ebay.

My 1978 and 1979 knowledge is low. I have not seen an issue dated 28th January 1978 on ebay.

From 1980 to 1985 I have a large collection so it gets a bit easier.

For 1980 I can't yet confirm 5th April, 12th April, 24th May 31st May, 7th June, 14th June, 21st June but have the rest of the year.

This eBay item sold a couple of months ago - eight issues from January and February 1978. Looks like we can eliminate that date.

I just won 12th June 1982 which completes my run of 1982 issues. I can confirm there were no missing weeks in 1982.

Can anyone verify if 15th April 1978 exists?

I can now confirm all issues from the beginning upto 25th November 1978. The first missing weeks appear to begin during December 1978.

I'll have to check but I'm fairly certain that RoR missed a couple of weeks in Dec 1978 and something like 4 or 5 in the June time of 1980.

Thanks Ray, I own a 25th November 1978 and have seen a 30th December for sale. Weeks that seem to be missing are 2nd December, 9th December, 16th December and 23rd December? Do you agree or was one of these weeks actually published?

I have most of 1980. I have 17th May 1980 and then 28th June 1980. I don't think any of the weeks between were published.

The three weeks 2/12 - 16/12 1978 are certainly missing, not sure about the 23/12 though. You are right about the five issues in 1980 though (24/5 - 21/6). None of these were published.

Just checking this old Compal auction suggests there were only three missing weeks in Dec 1978 and not 4 as I speculated...

Can you not tell from reading the stories? If the serials flow into each other despite the gap in your collection then you know they weren't published during those weeks.

Hi Lew. I can do that for 1980 as I have the surrounding issues but I don't have many issues from 1978 and none from December.
