Mum and Dad's Own
I was reading my Buster the other day and found an advert for Mum's Own and Dad's Own, books containing information and strips from old IPC girl and boy comics. Were these the only compilation books IPC have ever done and were they any good?

They're... alright. Very basic history books with snippets of strips and a few full pages. A few inconsistencies and enough mistakes to spot to keep Digifiend busy for a fortnight.Dunder Ed wrote:I was reading my Buster the other day and found an advert for Mum's Own and Dad's Own, books containing information and strips from old IPC girl and boy comics. Nice if you find them cheap enough for some samples of strips though.
Edit: Just browsing through the Dad's Own Annual and I spotted what turned me against this book back in 1993 when it came out. It completely dismisses the Odhams Power Comics with one phrase: "an odd assortment of mish-mash" and doesn't even publish one image from Wham, Smash or Pow.
The books were written by a senior Fleetway editor and they're fairly biased in that regard unfortunately.

Re: Mum and Dad's Own
Thanks Lew, Did IPC ever have any compilation books other than these? Such as the Beano and Dandy and Broons and Oor Wullie Annuals for DCT?
Re: Mum and Dad's Own
Here are the front covers. They had 64 pages, if we include the covers in the count, and were published by Fleetway in 1993 at £4.50. This is my final post. I have given too much of my time already to comicsuk. I am now following Kashgar's example, and moving on to new pastures. It is the right time. There is much to do.Dunder Ed wrote:Mum's Own and Dad's Own

I don't recall IPC ever doing any, no.Dunder Ed wrote:Thanks Lew, Did IPC ever have any compilation books other than these? Such as the Beano and Dandy and Broons and Oor Wullie Annuals for DCT?
These are not compilation books by the way. There are no compiled stories, just examples of various pages, some incomplete. For example they show a double page spread of a Frank Bellamy Thunderbirds strip but ruin it by pasting captions over it about the popularity of branding and other management-speak.
I wouldn't recommend either of the books really due to their bias, their sloppy layouts and their mistakes. I take back what I previously said about them being "alright". They're two of the worst comic history books ever produced.

I'm sorry to read that Phoenix but I understand your reasons. I've been leaving and returning so often here they've put a revolving door in. However there comes a time when one has to decide either to continue to try and be helpful or to stick to one's principles.Phoenix wrote:This is my final post. In light of various situations I've found myself in here, from being falsely accused of "bullying" by two members purely for disagreeing with their assertions, to weirdly having a post deleted that provided evidence of an obvious troll, to the recent events of being the odd one out for defending copyright law, I think it's time that I too accepted that this isn't the place it was, and isn't a place I want to be associated with any more. I will continue to be in touch with the members I get on with, privately, or on Facebook etc.
Al, you can close my membership now please.

There was the Birthday Book For Boys that IPC published in the early 70s that featured strips from various IPC comics - I put a scan of the cover on here a few months back. Must dash my sausages are done...

There's a copy of Mum's Own Annual at the Scope charity shop in Hull city centre.
