Lion Comics from the 1950s

Post by booksandcomics »

Hi all, does anyone know much about the Lion comic?

I've never really come across it before and have been offered a variety from the 1950s that have been bound. Not sure if they can be seperated to original comics or not (I'm personally not a fan at all of bound comics, rather have them all loose, bit weird I know but just a personal preference).

They are from;

1955 - Issues 150 through to 200 (excecpt 152, 168, 177, 198, 199)

1957 - Issues 256, 259, 260, 261, 263, 265, 267, 268, 271, 273, 274, 275, 276, 278, 279, 280, 281, 283, 284, 286, 288, 289, 290, 291, 292, 293, 294, 295, 296, 297, 298, 300.

I dont venture beyond Dandy really as I have other book collections that I focus on outside comics.

Can anyone give any tips? Are they particularly rare? Sort after? Worth the read / investment?

Cheers,

Adam

Lion started in 1952, and apparantly tried to muscle in on EAGLE territory, with a Dan Dare-a-like strip called Outlaw in Space, set in the year 3000 Only one page in colour in the early days....a bit like 60s BUSTER, then!

A strip called 'Jungle Robot' is well-regarded out of the adventure strips of the era you mention, or Robot Archie as he became known. Lion seems to be more traditional than the absurdist VALIANT, it seems to be closer to VICTOR going by my comics-history books---maybe an ardent LION enthusiast can help you more than I can.

It seems to be a solid, well-regarded adventure paper. I intend delving into LION myself before too long, it's on my hit-list.

If you don't want them put the guy in touch with me XD
I've seen some de-bound Champions before, and they were absolutely ruined, more like loose collections of pages, the spines were completely gone after being pulled back out. Don't do it!
