Whizzer and Chips Coming Back

Post by George Shiers »

I've just found out from Classic Comics that they will be bringing back Whizzer and Chips later this year. Probably for a one-off but I've no idea. Exciting news - perhaps they've similar plans with other comics such as Buster.

I can't post an image as I'm not on my computer (it has decided to not connect to the internet) but here's a screenshot of the announcement can be found here:

A very distinctive name that many passing past comic readers will recall when they catch sight of it at the newsagents. I wish this one-off (if similar to past Classics Comics) every success.

There's no guarentee it is a one-off - I'm just guessing it might be similar to the comics they did a few years back.

Egmont have done a few digital comic reprints recently (Battle and Roy of the Rovers material) so I'm guessing it might be in that format. I hope it is in paper form as well though.

The early editions still hold up pretty well, with Terry Bave providing a fair whack of the output.

Would younger retailers even recognise the name?

I guess the same reservation could have applied to 'Chips' in 1969. Speaking personally, although I'd never seen a copy of the old 'Illustrated Chips' at that point, I was already familiar with the name from my father's constant reminiscences about reading the original title during the 1920s and 1930s!

It was different in 1969 though. Comics were still so popular that any title would be guaranteed to be stocked. Retailers today have grown up expecting comics to be related to a licensed property, as have the readers. It might stand a better chance as a book pitched at the nostalgia market. (But let's not get our hopes up.)

I was texting a mate the other day and instead of referring to the Europa League as The Mickey Mouse Cup I decided to Anglicise the insult by referring to it as The Whizzer and Chips Cup. It might catch on.

I took it that was what Phil was referring to. The other paper Classic Comics weren't children aimed either.

I do wonder though how a cheap newsprint comic would work in today's climate*? I suspect a 28 pager for a fraction of the price of the current comics would do really well. When I took the Superhero Store to markets (not comic marts but general sales), the golden age and cheapo funnies really attracted kids' interest. Not that they could afford golden-age comics mind you...

(*yep, I know it's not gonna happen but it doesn't stop me wondering)
