I bought this comic on eBay last week, just in time to post some pages on my blog. Here's the Christmas issue of Wham! that was published exactly 50 years ago today (Monday 21st December 1964):

Re: Christmas Wham 1964
I have some Whams and remember that later on they had two Christmas Issues for two consecutive years which was strange. I know that in the early 20th century comics would have a bumper Christmas Issue in early December and a Christmas week issue at the end of the month.

Smash did the same, Steve, in 1966. It was just how Christmas Day fell that year, so they had snow on the logo for two weeks.stevezodiac wrote:I have some Whams and remember that later on they had two Christmas Issues for two consecutive years which was strange. I've got 30s comics with snow on the masthead in February. But with those issues of Wham! I think they had the words "Christmas issue" or "Christmas number" on the cover.

Yes, there were two Christmas issues that year. I blogged about them three years ago:stevezodiac wrote:I've got 30s comics with snow on the masthead in February. But with those issues of Wham! I think they had the words "Christmas issue" or "Christmas number" on the cover.

And here's the two 1966 Christmas issues of Smash!

As I said, it was due to how the dates fell that year, and when the comics would be in the shops. With the holidays, it meant that both issues would be out before Christmas Day if I remember correctly. I don't think other publishers did two Christmas issues but Odhams chose to.

I agree that Mr Baxendales work was absolutely top notch in this era......yes it is a shame that the subject matter of WW2 propagands stereotypes is tabboo these days as I used to love this matetial......I spoke to two Eastern girls today and I know the way they act today has got nothing to do with the atrocities of the 20th Century.
