Humour comics - the editors

Post by moloneymagic »

Hi all. Is much known about who the editors of the IPC humour comics of the 70s and 80s were? I'm thinking of Whizzer and Chips, Buster, Whoopee, Shiver and Shake, Monster Fun and so on. The editorial and design teams of the boys' and girls' comics (especially the boys' comics) seem to be much better documented. I haven't managed to find much information online about the regular staff on the funnies - perhaps it's all detail lost to the mists of time?

Thanks,
David

I'd guess that Lew Stringer must have worked with several humour editors at IPC, DC Thomson, Marvel UK, etc. over the last 35 years or so. In fact he's well on the way to becoming a National Treasure himself! :)

Blimey, thanks folks. :)

The group editor of the IPC humour comics was Bob Paynter (who had been the original editor of Whizzer and Chips when it launched in 1969). As group editor, Bob oversaw all those classic IPC funnies; Cor!!, Whoopee!, Monster Fun etc.

My editor on Buster was Allen Cummings. He'd been with the company since 1963 but I only knew him from 1988 until Buster's final issue in 1999. A very good editor indeed. I'm not sure when Allen started on Buster, but I think in the 1970s the editor was Len Wenn.

Before that, my editors on Oink! were Mark Rogers, Tony Husband, and Patrick Gallagher who worked together editing the comic in Manchester. (It was packaged for IPC. Bob Paynter had the final say-so on contents but it was mainly Mark, Tony, and Patrick deciding on what should be in it. Bob just made sure we didn't go too far!)

I didn't work on any of the other IPC funnies as most of my work was for Marvel UK at the time, so I don't know who edited the other comics. Hope that helps a bit though.

Yes, but he's retired now I'd imagine.

Lew, that's really helpful - thank you! And thanks to others for replies too. I've had a couple of leads for more info elsewhere so I'll follow those up too and hopefully the full picture will start to emerge.

All best,
David

David - Have you thought about trying to make contact with him? I'm sure there are a lot of questions we'd like to ask if you did.
