I think that GARFIELD is the second-most-successful comics property in history, after 'PEANUTS'. I think the strip is well-drawn and professional, but there's something slightly cynical and calculated about it: the strip avoids the use of seasons, or play on words [in order to sell to worldwide markets] which must surely limit it's scope for comedy-writing.
It's difficult to argue with this level of success, however, and the merchandising profits from the 'in-car' sucker-grip soft toys alone must be phenomenal.
