Whack

Post by DavidKW »

I was just remembering a comic strip the other day a newspaper strip called "Whack".

Does anyone have any information on this ie what was it about and which aper it was in? (don't know if this strip has been talking about on this site earlier - I have little time to properly look).

What caused me to remmeber it was:

On an edition of "Larry Grayson's Generation Game" in the late 70s, five newspaper strips were drawn behind screens by their artists, which the contestants had to identify.

The first one was Fred Basset, which both teams almost correctly identified under the name "Bassett Hound". Flook was also there but neither team identified - but my prents did as they read the Daily Mail.

No teams identified Whack - I and parents thoguht it a peculiar looking cartoon.

Has stuck in my mind and been fascinated to find out more information.

You don't mean Hugh Morren's Tommy Wack (later just Wack) from the Daily Express and The Sun, do you?

I don't know about the Daily Express but Hugh Morren's Wack appeared in the Daily Sketch before moving to The Sun. In the Sketch the strip was subtitled The British Working Man. You can find an example over at Steve Holland's Bear Alley: http://bearalley.blogspot.co.uk/2008/09 ... -1969.html

There are some later examples from The Sun at Comic Art Fans: http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiec ... ece=828474

It's interesting to see the way Morren's depiction of the character changed over the years.

I can only remember the strip being called Wack in the UK. I think Tommy Wack was only used overseas.
