In Film Fun I have it has that old gag..1938
...I hold the nail when I nod my head you hit it! says Hardy to Laurel....this gag must have been old even then..

Who is Joe E. Brown the famous fellow of the films?
Anyway its a nice class gag story
where he gives his posh party tickets to three tramps to attend as the rich posh person hadn't been very nice..two of the tramps look like the Chip's cover stars..

Wheeler and Woolsey the famous radio picture stars...who were they...not so famous now..
A lot of the characters seem to wear golfing checked trousers...

I know George Formby.. :D

the rectangle panels did restrict the drawings..and loads of text underneath..

found the comics of Tiger Tim..Radio Fun and Film Fun which my Dad had bought and now Mum as given to me..

The Radio Fun I have is 1947. prefering the Film Fun more..doe Radio Fun get better later in the 50's or earlier is better..?

Depends on your definition of "better" Peter. From what I've seen Radio Fun was always full of corny gags, slapstick, and rewards of dates with pretty girls, slap-up feeds, or both. Even real life doesn't get much better than that!

Joe E. Brown has the very last line in Some Like It Hot, Peter. He was also played by Frank Sinatra in a bio-pic, the name of which momentarily escapes me. Something along the lines of The Joker laughs. Or something.

A few more details for you Peter
Joe E (Evans) Brown (1892-1973) was a circus acrobat and semi-pro baseball player before he took to the vaudeville stage in the 1920's. His film career for the most part saw him appear as a wise-cracking basically nice guy 'working the angles' in many low-budget B movies. Ironically he is now best remembered for his role in 'Some Like it Hot', made well after his original film career had ended.
Brendan is mistaken in his reference to Frank Sinatra having played him in a biopic though. Brendan is confusing Joe E Brown with another comedian with a very similar name Joe E Lewis who Frank Sinatra played in the biopic 'The Joker is Wild' in 1957.
Wheeler and Woolsey were a comedy double act from the USA who were first placed together by Florenz Ziegfield in his 1929 revue Rio Rita. Bert Wheeler was the rather child-like half of the team while Robert Woolsey was the slick-haired, cigar-chewing 'boss' of the partnership. Sadly this partnership, which was very effective in the films they made in the period 1930-1937, was cut short by the illness which resulted in Robert Woolsey becoming bed-ridden in 1937 and remaining so until his death fourteen months later in Oct 1938.

I hope I got the artist right in my post.it all looks like George to me..

Funny how you can have a long career and only be rememebered for a small cameo part...that has happened to many actors and actresses..time does move on and how quick we forget..

Hi Peter, The Ken Dodd strip was drawn by James Malcolm while the Comic Cuts cover was the work of Albert 'Charlie' Pease.

What is this I see? A post from Kashgar at the weekend? The effects of yesterday's transformation of Doctor Who must have caused a calamitous timeslip as far away as Tyneside. I'll have to go and see if Newcastle United have been suddenly restored to the Premiership. We can't be having that as well, can we? Doctor, Doctor...........
