No, I'm afraid not, Lew. But I wish you the very best of luck anyway as I'm well aware just how nerve-racking lecturing and public speaking can be when you are not used to it.

I won't be there either, but did you pick that picture? And if so, is it a dig? If it is, that is so funny.
I started to say something sensible but my parents took over my brain!

The photo of me in Blackpool or the artwork? I sent them a selection of my artwork but I didn't know what they'd use. The Derek the Troll one is part of a strip I did this year to celebrate 30 years since I created the short-lived character. I must revive him again soon!

I've never seen Derek the Troll before so I thought it was an allusion to something else. In this internet age, you must have some cracking scripts to use for a character such as Derek.

No, I wouldn't waste the ink on that.

I created him in 1984 for the gaming magazine Warlock, so most comic readers will never have seen the strip. There's only 10 or 11 pages and I was going to compile them into a self-published comic, with new material, to sell at the Lakes Festival but I won't have time now. Hope to do it before the end of the year though or early next year.

So how did things go at Kendal yesterday, Lew, your lecture in particular?

It went well I think. I'd supplied 95 images and they'd set the power point up perfectly. I hope people enjoyed my presentation. Will blog about it sometime this week but for now deadlines beckon.

I've now had time to write a review from my perspective of the event. Hope you enjoy it:

That is a very interesting review of the festival, Lew, as seen through the eyes of a participant rather than a visitor, who would not have had access to all the experiences you mention. I'm not surprised that prior to getting into your lecture you were nervous in such exalted company, even though only a few of your fellow artists would have been able to be present to hear it as the others will probably have been busy elsewhere. It was certainly nice to see the huge screen the organisers provided for your Powerpoint presentation because the images will have been clearly visible to any members of your audience who were forced to sit at the back of the room.

As you know, in general the comics that will have been the subject of interest to the general public who paid to attend the various lectures and workshops are not my cup of tea, but I do nevertheless find it very encouraging that such a thoroughly well-organised convention should attract a decent footfall throughout the weekend.

Oh it wasn't the presence of other artists that made me nervous as most of those are old pals. I just didn't want to let the readers down. It turned out ok though.

Here's a review from someone else of other parts of the weekend:

Well perhaps my assumption was influenced by an experience I had when I was giving a talk at Liverpool University to a large number of Spanish teachers from Liverpool and the Wirral, many of whom I knew well, in which I was showing them how to teach more effectively towards the then new GCSE exams. The lecture was well received but as I was walking back to my car, and due entirely to the high stress levels associated with introducing some entirely new concepts to a knowledgeable group that contained some teachers who were a lot more experienced than I was, I was as sick as a dog on a walkway about a couple of hundred yards from Parry's bookshop.

Blimey, I wasn't that nervous! No, it was a very laid back event, Derek, as are most comics festivals/shows/conventions or whatever they choose to call them. I felt quite relaxed after a few minutes and was quite surprised that the hour seemed to fly by so quickly (for me anyway). I'd happily do it again, possibly refining it with less images so I could focus longer on certain areas. The feeling from some was that I spent too long on the prewar comics/papers (15 or 20 minutes or so?) but as they're virtually forgotten now I wanted to give them their due. I could refine that to perhaps feature less.
