Beano Covers in the Guardian

Post by babington »

You've seen them before but maybe not in such nice resolution...

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/gallery ... ook-covers

Wouldn't be my top 20, which would start...

1. 1941 (Eggo with egg)
2. 1961 (Jonah)
3. 1969 (Bash St Kids)
4. 1994 (Dennis with torch)
5. 1966 (Biffo with drum)

Wow! they've missed loads of classic Beano covers..

My favourite not on the list is 1972 with everyone crossing the road

Also love the jigsaw cover not on there..

I do like the Jack Flash cover on there..

Fantastic high resolution. I just copied most of them to Comic Vine. Al should get those uploaded here too, they're definitely better copies than what's currently in the annuals gallery.

I dunno, that 2014 one, I'm sure I've seen that in MUCH higher resolution...

That's 'cos you drew it, lol. Isn't artwork usually twice the printed size?

It varies. I usually draw stuff at 140% but have done all sizes from 100% to 400% depending on the job. (And that's without getting into the confusing printers terminology like 'twice up', which, of course is not 'twice the size'!) This cover was 155%.

Oops - that's the way I've always understood it (as opposed to 'two-up') :?

With those 20 annual covers to drool over, can I assume that Digi is now relieved that his gleefully confident assertion in October 2012 that The Guardian would be history within a week was way too optimistic?

Oo-er! That reminds me of my time as an office junior in a London advertising agency when I had to deliver copy to the printers off Wardour Street. I was warned to explain everything as unambiguously as possible since they were known to take great pleasure in deliberately misinterpreting the simplest instructions! :(
