100% Official Dennis the Menace and Gnasher MEGAzine

(What a long title).

I assume that anyone who is going to get the new Dennis the Menace and Gnasher Megazine has now got a copy. So what do you think? More importantly do kids like it and do they prefer it to the retired BeanoMAX?

I quite liked it and I can see that some of the articles appealing to kids. However I would liked to have seen more comic strips preferably featuring some of the supporting cast. In fact a full page strip featuring Lew's Rasher would fit in a treat.

But to be fair it is only the first issue.

Got issue 2 today. Definitely BeanoMAX with a different name judging from the barcode (and the BeanoMAX logo next to it).

But is it important? I don't think so. To me, it is still a different comic.

So, they did publish the wrong date at the back of the previous issue then (I originally assumed it was the recall date that was wrong, until subscriber copies started turning up at the weekend). The Megazine is out every three weeks, MAX was out every four.

The shop I bought the weekly Beano from didn't have the Megazine. I'll keep an eye out.

Dennis's website hasn't been updated yet, and beano.com is offline (error 503).

I don't think D&G is every 3 weeks, its still every 4 weeks - recall on #1 was 14th Aug, leading to the sub copies going out for the weekend there, and the #2 recall is 11th Sep, 4 weeks between issues.

Looks like there was 3 weeks gap only between the "last" BeanoMax and the first D&G.

Not quite. Four weeks between the last BeanoMax and the first D&G, then three weeks, which suggests that once they had observed the 75th birthday with the first issue, they wanted to bring it forward in the month to the middle, perhaps to avoid clashing with other publications.

I predict that it's going to remain as the Wednesday before the third Saturday of the month rather than the fourth, and also remain monthly rather than four-weekly.

I picked up the first issue and I agree that it needs more comic content.

p.s Sid if you start collecting this comic how will you fit the title on your avatar.

LOL. It would be a little challenge but I may have a go just as an exercise the next time I am home.

It's a good job then that all the comics of the 1930's aren't still around - you'd never fit all those on there!

True!

Regarding my original question, no-one has yet said if they prefer Dennis the Menace and Gnasher Megazine to BeanoMAX or vice-a-versa.

The D&G subscription screen in the DCT website admits that it is BeanoMAX with a different name.

Issue 3 of D&G (or BeanoMAX 82) is in the shops.

Contrary to what the website says! Why don't they update it on time? It still says issue 2 is out now, but issue 3 came out on Wednesday.

Anyway, this month's issue features the Arena of Awesome.

At least The Dandy's material has come in handy for something.

Yeah, I'm glad to see it reaching a wider audience. Even before the launch of the Megazine, BeanoMAX was selling three or four times as much as the Dandy did.

And maybe these comics from the stash will prompt reader requests to see more... not just as a second issue from the stash (Nuke Noodle, which was in issue 1, and Arena of Awesome can do this, but Bad Grandad, which was used in issue 2, was used up in one go), but also possibly as a new series in the Beano. Two Dandy mini-strips have turned up there already - I Pity The School as reprints, and Guess Who as a new run, as well as Bananaman having started a run of new episodes.

That would be good if one or more of these strips found their way into The Beano or Dennis the Menace and Gnasher Megazine even. In that way, The Dandy legacy would live on. But then again it is doing that already thanks to the reprints. :)

Now that No. 3 is out, I suppose it is too early to tell if the Megazine is proving more successful than its predecessor or will it one day revert back to to the BeanoMAX name.
