Chunkee the Monkey Returns

Post by SID »

Just read this week's issue and in the Bash Street Kids, Chunkee, Plug's monkey, makes a return.

Not sure if he has been in The Beano before, but he was a regular in Plug back in the 70s.
Reading comics since 1970. My Current Regulars are: 2000 AD (1977-), Judge Dredd Megazine (1990-), Spaceship Away (2003-), Commando (2013-), Monster Fun (2022-), Deadpool and Wolverine (2023-), Quantum (2023-).

Well I wasn't expecting that!

Also, Chunkee hadn't been in the Beano before. ;)

You mean the one in the shops on Wed 10th, right? Anyway, yeah, I don't think Chunkee has appeared since Beezer axed the Plug strip. I don't think even the Bash Street Kids Summer Specials, which often carried solo strips for the kids, used him. Definitely a surprise. In fact wouldn't this be the first time David Sutherland has drawn the character?

And he's drawn him the same way I.e with a cap similar to Plug's.

Although to me, it's not very similar to Chunkee as Vic Neill and Dave Gudgeon drew him, Dave's version being the one I knew in the Beezer. More like one of Dave Sutherland's normal monkeys with Plug's nose and cap.

Can I ask that any other details of the strip be held over until Wednesday when it's available to non-subscribers?

And here we are. Dave Sutherland's version in 2015 and Dave Gudgeon's version from 18 April 1981.
