He's been working for The Beano since 1960 (and on Bash Street for all but the first two years) - that's 56 years ago, he must be in his 80s by now.

It looks like he must be the longest-serving artist on the BEANO ever: even Dudley Watkins' long tenure ran just over 30 years...however Watkins' work must surely have graced every issue during his time there.

I think David is 81 or 82. Hopefully he hasn't retired altogether.

To me, he is the best 'ghoster' UK comics ever bequeathed us. His early work on the Bash Street Kids especially was top-notch, even compared to the best of the Baxendale originals.

After Watkins passed on in 1969 and David Law the following year, his workload increased considerably, as obviously he got the plum Dennis and BIFFO covers for a fair few years---understandably, the Bash Street artwork became more streamlined because of this: however when all is said and done, I often thought David Sutherland WAS the BEANO for a long time!

Ironically, his first all-original strip The Germs was not quite in the same league as his ghosting I felt, however overall his work ranks amongst the finest of it's type put out in this country.

I was lucky enough to see his original artwork on the Black Bob/ Gnasher BEANO Comic Library he done---it looked stunning when seen at first-generation.

A bit of David Sutherland trivia: Beano writer Ian Gray used to sometimes perk up the Bash Street strips he sent to him with several decidedly non-Beano -like embellishments, for the amusement of both men.

If he has retired hope The Beano will celebrate his work in some way...
His Bash Street kids were still great and prefer it to David Parkin who is doing a good job..But you can't beat Sutherland..

My favourite Beano artist, for sure.

Parkins was a logical choice for the replacement BSK artist, as he also replaced Sutherland on Dennis and Gnasher back in 1998, so the editors knew he could do a similar style.

If David Sutherland is finished with the Beano for good, I agree that some sort of tribute should happen.

I wonder if David Parkins is the permanent replacement for David Sutherland though if he has retired.

With the revamp coming could there be more changes in store for Bash Street?

Who knows? We're definitely losing Pup Parade, but other than that everything's still a secret.

David seems to be back doing BSK regularly now.

I believe Dave was unwell for some months.
