So that's how the hoods were unmasked! I have an annual which features the Hoods storyline (must be set in the middle of this serial), and I've seen a couple of random strips from the middle of this serial, but I've never seen the ending before. Thanks!

I don't think I've ever seen that episode. There's something very final and sad about it isn't there? The penultimate panel is unusually quiet, - one would expect to see the kids cheering as the baddies were taken away. The scene of Winker's "death" is very unusual for a humour strip, or any Dandy strip.Peter Gray wrote: This is Eric Roberts last comic work for The Dandy comic..what a dramatic ending!!
Good to see the slap up feed ending, - a typical Winker Watson scene and light relief after the grim atmosphere of the strip!
I always liked Eric Roberts' artwork. His characters often looked very similar but there was something about that bold confident brushline and the liveliness of the characters that instantly appealed to me as a kid.

Notice though that the gun isn't actually shown in the strip. Perhaps showing guns was out of bounds.

BANG!!!
hard hitting stuff for a comic for children..
as an adult I'm enjoying the drama..
Re: Dandy adventure stories what year they were in..
I thought that was Winker Watson vs. the Klu Klux Klan for a moment.

I know it's tempting to say Klu because of what follows it, Raven, but the organisation is actually the Ku Klux Klan.Raven wrote:Klu Klux Klan

Yes, of course, sorry. I think I did know that. It is a bit of tongue twister!

I think I see now why the last few episodes of that Winker series don't ever get reprinted. Children in danger with a gun, in an adventure strip (i.e., it's not even played for laughs, like where a flag with BANG! pops out instead of a bullet). Usually when guns are shown, it's something like bandits trying to rob a bank, only to get thwarted by Desperate Dan. The Winker example though, is something with sadly is quite realistic. Guns in schools have happened in real life after all. In America mostly, but Dunblane does spring to mind.

Blimey! Pretty powerful stuff for a children's comic. It's a shame that there's nothing like that now. I suppose it's a bit too mature for today's Beano or Dandy Xtreme, and older children who still read comics are probably more likely to go for Marvel/DC. Suppose this is what the DFC tried to do, to an extent...

Who would have though the `Winker Watson` strip would become so `gritty` I Should have like it shown `Creepy` getting pumped full of lead!
