I bought one recently, having stopped in 2007 after 30 years because of the newsagent thinking "It isn't really suitable for little Chris" due to all the bonking.

It wasn't bad (and it was largely sex-free) but oh my, buckets of blood!

I did recognise a cartoonist from VIZ...

We are surely in the dystopian future of MCC vs Rollerball as predicted by the Goodies, where you have to keep it secret that you are a scoutmaster, and the only comics are Randy and Porno.

Well done Dandy staff! After I bought a Harry Hill Dandy and didn't recognise the people in it, I didn't get another until recently (I disliked the Dennis & Gnasher revamp, speaking personally, so stopped subscribing to the Beano) and the latest Dandy is quite good. There are, however, six newsagents locally, and none of them stocks it...
That's a common complaint, and no doubt one of the reasons why sales are so low. Unfortunately, it's not the only reason. The news reports prove that a lot of people simply thought it had closed years ago. Another reason is that all print media is selling less these days (honestly, that 1950s 2million sales figure they keep quoting? Irrelevant, no comic gets close to that now). And yet another reason is that when they tried to increase distribution when they launched the new look Dandy two years ago, they made a fatal error with the advertising, with nothing in the Beano or on TV. The lack of awareness made the extra distribution futile, and it quickly evaporated.

Yeah, I find that Tesco, Asda, and WHSmith can be relied on to have it (although Tesco stick them on the top shelf where kids can't reach! :x), but newsagents are very hit and miss.

Was very sad to read about this a while back.

Will say this sounds spooky - but when I was talking to a vendor a while back I was predicting with sadness that the Beano & Dandy would at least merge or one would close, given the state of things today.

The vendor said that would never happen to either title...we agreed though that putting celebs in the comic sounded a bit desperate - but anything is worth a try to keep it going.

Still 75 years is a hell of a run & sounds like it'll go out with a deserved bang.
