Bear in mind that the week after the last print Dandy came out, the Beano Christmas issue was released. There would've been a few weeks gap anyway, even if the print comic had survived longer. I'm sure that gap could've come before issue 1 of the digital comic, instead of after issue 2. Would've given them a few weeks of extra time to do internal beta testing. There was absolutely no reason to launch the digital version, which clearly wasn't ready to launch, on the same day the last print issue was published.

Apart from the massive publicity it generated.

Seemed to me the reason was so that there'd be a smooth transfer from the print comic to the digital comic. It also meant that December 4th would again be a significant launch date.

Smooth? Maybe that's what they wanted, but it certainly isn't what ended up happening.

You made a statement that there was "absolutely no reason" why they'd launch the digital Dandy on the day of the paper version's anniversary/demise. I pointed out the reasons, that's all.

Regardless for why the digital comic has not been successful, do people here think that The Dandy will return?

In some form or other, yes I would think so. It's a comic name that has been around for 75 years (and six months, accuracy lovers) so I would think they'll do something to keep the 'brand' alive.

It depends if you mean as a regular title, or just if there'll be the odd thing with the Dandy name/characters/material from time to time in the future. The latter, quite possibly, the former, I'd suggest, probably not.

Even a four page insert in the middle of the Beano would be something although it might be considered showing a lack of respect making it part of its junior stablemate.

Hopefully everybody would want to see the Dandy return as a periodical, digital or print - but for sure, it will have to be able to run and keep running without the problems that have dogged it over the last six months. I'm not personally optimistic, but I want to be proved wrong!

Technically, they've done that before with the Beezer and Topper, and Rover and Adventure. Of course, so did IPC/Fleetway with a few of Buster's early mergers.

Disney have long since stopped making any tangible Mickey Mouse cartoon shorts since the early 50s [other than the odd one-off] but I'm sure you will agree that the character is still seen everywhere, on T-shirts and mugs, and countless other outlets.


The same thing will happen with the more famous DANDY characters : they will turn up in reprint books and other formats, if not to the same extent as Disney character licensing.

I think there has been some Mickey mouse shorts on the Disney channel Mickey mouse club house

As Peter alludes, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse - new animation - is on TV every day. (It's been running for seven years now.)

But Mickey was always around with the newspaper strip, comics, video games, TV's Mickey Mouse club revivals, heavy licensing, etc. The problem with The Dandy's characters, who have nothing of the Mouse's ubiquity, as the years go by, is that only people over a certain age will have much of a strong nostalgic connection to them.

I saw this on cartoonbrew it looks great and captures the spirit of yesterday...

Spy you should have used Betty Boop instead of Mickey Mouse now that has been kept going because of t shirts posters etc..
