Here are some early Desperate Dan reprints from the Dandy Monster comics 1945 and 48 and are of early Dan strips from around 1938/9 but the question is did these strips make it into the weekly comic or were unused and instead of forgetting about them they just put them in the annuals at a later date?

What makes you think those are reprints? The one on the right doesn't look like one, as it has captions which the strip never had in the then-fortnightly comic (wasn't weekly back then - wartime paper rationing).

It is blatantly obvious that the Dan strips are from an earlier period as Dan got rounder by the mid 40s plus Watkins style had changed from the late 1930s to the mid 1940s too...

The captions would have been added to the story as did many other strips in the monster comics that didn't have them in the weekly then fortnightly comic Barney Boko Hungry Horace etc the strip has just been reformatted to fill the page
