1939 Dandy Book in shops now!

Discuss or comment on anything relating to Britain's longest running comic. The home of Korky the Cat and Desperate Dan. Has been running since 1937.

1939 Dandy Book in shops now!

The hardback facsimilie reprints of the first Dandy and Broons books are in the shops now. Check out Waterstones, or get them cheaper online at Amazon.

Very nice slipcased editions. Not *perfect* facsimilies as I'm sure the paper quality wasn't that smooth in the originals, and with huge white margins at the top and bottom of the pages I'm wondering if the proportions are accurate. But they're *very* minor niggles of course. The reproduction in the Dandy one is superb (The Broons less so, as some fine lines have dropped out) and they're well worth the money.

Let's hope they prove to be a success and that they continue on a yearly basis like the Rupert and Giles facsimilies. (My local Waterstones has already sold out of the Dandy edition!)

Lew,

Had a quick look at both this and The Broons facsimiles in Waterstones in Chelmsford (can't buy it as it's on my Christmas list  ) - and I agree with your minor niggles about the authenticity of the reproduction.

I have a facsimile of the first Beano Book that was produced by Portfolio Editions in 2004 which is fantastic but I'm not sure they are still in business (couldn't find any trace on the net etc).
I contacted them shortly after this was published and they were certainly planning on doing more and suggested even branching out into Rover / Wizard etc if the demand was there - how cool would that be?

I wholeheartedly applaud Aurum for their efforts here, if they follow up with more Beano / Dandy / Broons or maybe branch out themselves into the 'boys' annuals, hopefully they can correct these little glitches. I'll buy them anyway though

It's great to have this, I hope more follow very soon...
I had wondered about the big margins, does anyone know for sure what the original proportions were?
One niggle I have is the reproduced "damage" to the cover.. could they not have used a cleaned up image like on the slipcase? For me the point of this release is to own an exact replica of how the annual would have looked when new in the shops in 1938, all shiney and perfect and new, and the faded, damaged cover image kind of spoils this for me...
Still, it's another minor niggle, I'm delighted with the book and have saved myself about ?5985..

I'd really like to see similar releases of all the Dandy and Beano books that are rare/expensive to find good condition originals of... all the 40s and 50s ones... ideally with several released per year so it doesn't take 20 years...

Anyway, let's hope sales are good for this release....

It came out last week. The Phantom Stranger one came out yesterday.

For American comics, it's always best to check out the distributor's weekly list so you don't miss anything. http://www.diamondcomics.com/shipping.asp

The list is subject to change through the week but check on it on Wednesday nights and you'll have a final definite list of what's coming out in UK comic shops on the Thursday. (American comics are delivered to UK comic shops on Thursdays.) If there's not a comic shop in your area, comic dealers sell the latest comics on eBay at very reasonable fixed price rates on Fridays.

Hope that helps.

Hmm, why do the Broons and the Dandy facsimile both say "1939 Annual" on the sleeve, when the Dandy one was published in 1938 for 1939 and the Broons one was published in 1939 for 1940? They seem to have used the year published dating system for the Broons and the year-published-for system for the Dandy. Which is odd, when the two sleeves are otherwise carefully done in consistant matching styles to compliment one another...

Still, at least it's not a mistake on the actual book...
