This is just for Steve as it might be of some interest. There is an article about Deptford, three quarters of a page long, on page 55 of the magazine accompanying today's issue of The Guardian. In the photograph there is a girl running on a grassy area behind which there are what seem to be high-rise flats. Perhaps that's the only grassy area the photographer could find. Despite the mention of two pie and mash shops, there seems to be little else to get enthusiastic about apart from the Dog & Bell and the cafe at the Albany. There are some decent schools but the trains to more or less anywhere are 'an embarrassment', and the cheapest property would seem to be a one-bedroom flat at a quarter of a million. One can only imagine the prices in more upmarket areas, if indeed there are any! Apparently, to get away from the noisy, traffic-clogged centre, you can have 'a soothing walk along the sludgy Deptford Creek'. Under the circumstances I am pleased to be heading for Cornwall as soon as I sell my house! Next time we get together I think it will have to be at 30th Century Comics in Lower Richmond Road like last time, or maybe at an Ephemera Fair like the earlier time we met up. I hope you and your mate Steve are well. Cheers.

Grassy area is probably Deptford Park as the Pepys Estate is across the road which has three tower blocks. I remember them being built around 1969. I've had a beer in the Dog and Bell - Fullers London Pride. My mate Kenny Raven drinks in there. Deptford Creek is nearer Greenwich and has a Waitrose overlooking it. I saw Steve at the comic fair last Sunday. I didn't buy any comics though. I had a holiday in Bodmin back in the seventies with my family. I remember my brother having trouble ordering a pint of light in a pub. Never heard of in the west country but I had the same problem in Pimlico, London having to explain it was two bottles of light ale in pint glass. I miss light ale, supermarkets just don't stock it although I can still get Mild (my beer of choice) from Morrisons. Speaking of which I still owe you a beer. Off to Deptford Market now.

All I picked up in the flea market was a single I'm a Moody Guy by Shane Fenton & The Fentones. 50p. Derek will know of it.

I'm disappointed you didn't mention he later became Alvin Stardust. Sadly no longer with us.

I went to Guys Hospital in December for a prostate check up. I was told everything was OK and have an appointment for December this year. The Daily Mail is campaigning for more funds for prostate cancer as it is now a bigger killer than breast cancer.

You know, Steve, I think it has a lot to do with men not recognising the symptoms. When I told my doctor, I was consulting him over a different matter, so it was something of an afterthought when I mentioned an inability to wee at half time in home games at Bolton. I put it down to the excitement during the first half, and before you contradict me let me assure you that most first halves were exciting at the time. My doctor told me there and then to make an appointment at Ormskirk Hospital's urology department to have some biopsies done. I did as instructed, and the rest is history. Actually I did have to go back once a year for six years after the operation before the specialists there told me I didn't need to have any further blood tests as there was clearly no longer any cancer in my system.

With apologies for mentioning the Daily Mail twice in one topic but they have an excellent medical section on Tuesdays and last year it mentioned the possible side effects of prostate biopsies including incontinence and impotence. A lot of the time the biopsies are unnecessary but the harm has been done. Luckily they mentioned new scanning equipment which may obviate the need for a physical biopsy. At the moment I more concerned with my knees which are giving me gyp. It was bloomin' perishing today which doesn't help.

I just thought of a joke re those side effects:

Man in middle of love making to wife " Sorry sweetheart but I really must go for a Jimmy" (wee).

Woman: "That's ok dear I doubt I'd have noticed your absence anyway".

Getting back to the problem urinating at half time, were you sitting on a hard seat? The reason I ask is that a couple of years ago in the pub with a couple of colleagues at the Tower of London I found it impossible to urinate. It wasn't shy bladder syndrome as I tried in a cubicle as well. I had been to the same pub a few times before with another colleague Sundeep (Sunny) after we'd played pool and had no trouble. Thinking about it later it occurred to me that with Sunny I'd always stood at the bar but with my two colleagues we sat at a table with high wooden seats. I therefore assumed the pressure of the hard seat had affected my plumbing.
