Beano : 80 Years of Fun

Post by Kashgar »

When a comic title has been published for 80 years and has celebrated numerous anniversaries along the way it is often difficult for a celebratory publication to say anything that hasn't been said before but, to its credit, 'Beano : 80 Years of Fun' does give it an admirable try.
100 pages devoted to eight representative Beano's published across the decades is an interesting way to celebrate the comics 80 years as, after all, I think most of us can be described as the Beano's children, it's just that we each might be talking about a different Beano.
For instance, for me, my Beano of fond memory would always have Biffo the Bear on the front cover and Dennis the Menace on the back and include within its pages the likes of Punch and Jimmy and the Country Cuzzins along side Lord Snooty and the Bash Street Kids.
My collection of Beano and Beano related publications topped 5,000 some time ago and this bookazine is a welcome addition to any Beano collection, large or small.

I picked this up a couple of days ago and I agree that it's a nice production. While it inevitably repeats information that can be obtained elsewhere I was particularly struck by the large photographs of past editors.

More information, please. I thought the 80th birthday issue would provide the celebrations. Is this a separate publication?

Shouldn't this be in the Beano section? Not looked there yet so maybe my question is answered there.

Hi Steve, It is a separate publication. Well worth the £6.99 I think. I posted it here as I felt that it would be of general interest given the Beano's iconic status. I will be posting some musings on the bookazine in the Beano comics section shortly. Lew Stringer has reviewed it on his blog too.

I looked at Hull Kingswood on Monday, no luck there, but picked it up on Tuesday in the Hull City Centre branch. Maybe it's only in larger stores?
