His early illustrations are very good, but they don't have a strong personal style. Having to draw quickly for TV Comic pushed him into a style that looked fast and exciting, and uniquely John Canning. I guess he thought it looked too sloppy, but I admire artists who can get things just right in rush. I can't!

Yes. Bill McCail, who produced strips like Back From The Dead for Gerald Swan, is usually dismissed as a very limited artist too - but people forget that he was working fast for ready money. In fact he went on to become a noted horse painter who exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy and sold work to the Queen Mother.
