Best Story/Series in Commando

Post by SID »

For all you Commando fans out there, is there a particular story or series that stick out?

For me, it is the Convict Commandos series. I don't just like the stories but the characters too. In fact, I don't normally collect the comic as there would be too many to get but I have started keeping any issue starring the Commandos.

One thing to add: they are suspiciously very similar to Battle Picture Weekly's Rat Pack.
Reading comics since 1970. My Current Regulars are: 2000 AD (1977-), Judge Dredd Megazine (1990-), Spaceship Away (2003-), Commando (2013-), Monster Fun (2022-), Deadpool and Wolverine (2023-), Quantum (2023-).

There was a really great one by Jason Quinn about the invasion of the Channel Islands. The hero is a policeman who is still assigned to his duties but he picks up a friendship with a German but Nazi-hating soldier.

Some of the Celtic stuff's been great too.

In tribute to the late great (IMHO) Starblazer, I have literally just started collecting any Sci-Fi themed Commandos - not that there are many. However, I am awaiting three issues to come through the letterbox.

There are quite a few.

Spaceman In A Spitfire
Space Pilot
Soldier From Space
Valley Of Secret Weapons (could be classed as Sci-Fi)
Project "Doomsday"
The Men From Space
Out Of The Future
Space Watch

I hope this gives you a few extra titles to look out for Sid.

Glad I could help. There are a few more out there, but it depends on your definition of SF. If it is futuristic weapons, then you have to go for Valley Of Secret Weapons, but if you like your SF with a touch of fantasy, then The Magic Blade is not a bad one.

For me, it has always the ghostly tales that got me like Cards Of Fate or Squadron Of Doom. I have always liked the ones with a touch of the supernatural to the story.

I enjoy the SF ones and the slightly out there stories that you can get, but there's nothing like the supernatural ones to find a great story.

I like Commando but unfortunately not enough to collect all (nearly) 5000 issues.

Just to expand what I posted earlier in this thread. Literally this week, I came across an old torn copy featuring a sci-fi theme (Gladiator Challenge). I loved Starblazer and would still be getting it to this day if it was still around. Sci-fi themed Commando would be the next best thing so have decided to collect them instead.

Supernatural stories is not a major jump from sci-fi, so yes, colcool, I could may start collecting them in future (or at least keep the new ones that come along).

Incidentally, just received:

Commando 2725 - Gladiator Challenge
Commando 2774 - Space Watch

Both good reads and worthy of being in Starblazer. Plus both have the same characters so another series. :)

Convict Commandos series

I was shocked and gripped by the story of the hunger pill which drives people mad...that was strong stuff...

I liked the ladies flying out of date planes series...Russian witches or something like that..

I can't recall issue numbers, but one of my favourites was a story about a Royal Military Police NCO who applied for and got attached to close protection duties (guarding VIPs). One memorable moment was him being taught evasive maneuvers in a car - which he had to put to use later on (I'm sure the story was set in Germany).

There's a certain mystique about the Royal Military Police, hence why I have enjoyed their rare appearances in fiction.

Hmm. It does seem like that Commando has stopped printing new Convict Commandos stories as there have been none for quite a while. :(

More like Alan Hebden has taken a break from them. And talking of Alan Hebden, who's going to be lucky enough to meet him at Enniskillen?

Alas, I won't be able to go but if I could, I would definitely ask him about the Commandos.

Are you going, colcool?
