Re: Various picture libraries - identify the cover artists

Okay, now the romance ones. They're all issues of DC Thomson's Star: Love Stories in Pictures from 1987 and 1988. They're much tighter than the war covers - perhaps they were painted at a larger size. http://paddybrown.co.uk/SLS1148.jpg http://paddybrown.co.uk/SLS1149.jpg http://paddybrown.co.uk/SLS...

Various picture libraries - identify the cover artists

Picked up a few picture library titles last week, and I'm trying to identify the cover artists. First, the war titles. The first is this rather striking two-colour image from Battle Picture Library no 912 (1975, reprinting an issue from 1963). http://paddybrown.co.uk/BPL912.jpg Next, an issue of Mic...

Re: Jack Pamby biographical details

Update: the Buster Comic site says Pamby's last "Charlie Pease" strip was in June 1974, so while he may have retired from his staff position in the 60s, he kept working, presumably freelance, into the 70s. So the two Pambys in my previous post can't be him. Instead, the best bet seems to be John Alb...

Jack Pamby biographical details

Latest subject for my Biographical Dictionary project at the UK Comics Wiki: Jack Pamby. Clark's dictionary gives "1902?-1966?" as his dates, but the BMDs don't match that. He says Jack retired early some time in the 1960s and died of cancer shortly after, before he was 65. There are only two Pambys...

Identify the artist?

Steve Holland's looking for someone who can identify the artist of "N. E. Spooks" from the Boys' World annuals for 1968 and 69. Three examples at the link. Anybody recognise them?

Jack Monk

My efforts to create a Biographical Dictionary of British Comics at the UK Comics Wiki continue. I'm including only those who are known to have died, who were born before 1913 or who were active before 1930, and I'm working my way through the names I've gathered and writing articles on them, using t...

They're not my dates, they're the dates on Wikipedia's page on the Wolf of Kabul. You know what they're like about cites.

Re: Comics and Empire

The most obviously colonialist strip I can think of is George Beardmore and Frank Bellamy's "Fraser of Africa" from the Eagle, with its white hero bringing law to the natives and defending them against other, bad Europeans - and Dan Dare was metaphorically pretty colonialist, an English hero explori...

Re: Zenith collected

This whole business, along with the ongoing wrangling over Marvelman, has brought a few things to the fore. The British comics industry seems to have operated for years on the assumption that a page rate buys all rights, but that's custom and practice, and the law says different. Under UK copyright ...

Re: Cheap and Cheerful

An anecdote that may be relevant here. When I was at art college about 20 years ago, because I was interested in comics I was introduced to Will Simpson, who was then drawing Judge Dredd for 2000AD. He told me how much 2000AD artists got paid - if I remember rightly, it was something like £120 a pag...

Phil - I asked at the Newspaper Library, but they only hold papers published in Belfast, so I'm afraid we're out of luck on those Ken Reid competitions.

I have no idea. I'll ask next time I'm in the newspaper library, but I'm in the north, so we might have got the UK edition.

You should be able to order his death certificate from Scotland's People, the Scottish genealogy site.
