Re: The unofficial history of the Beano

My only complaints are that its not very critical of the Beano except a couple times. Including the artwork of the short lived Gordon Gnome story and the first series of the 2009 dennis cartoon. I feel kind of sorry for that artist. he's the only one the book criticises. Eh? What does he think is w...

Re: My Grandfather was the artist behind Cap'n Hood

Thanks for the details on your Grandad, Max. It's not too surprising that you've not come across Cap'n Hood though Col as the strip only ran for 20 weeks in Sparky even though it was printed on full colour on the back page. It ran from No 212 (8/2/69) to No 231 (21/6/69) and it never appeared in th...

Re: Full 2018 schedule for Treasury of British Comics

Intrigued by the 13th Floor. I remember reading part of it reprinted in the early nineties Eagle monthly (?) where I also had my first taste of Charley's War. I remember it being a very interesting and transgressive story but I never read the whole thing.

Re: What comics did you buy today?

Purchased several The best of Roy of the Rovers monthly on Amazon, never seen these before so keen to check them out. There were two phases of that. The early issues reprinted a whole serial, or a story arc of a longer serial. This would take up the whole issue unless there was space left over whic...

If they missed out Commando, maybe they overlooked other comics too (from English-speaking countries other than the US or UK, for example).

Re: Ebay - you want how much for it???

There was a time I would have given down payment with my soul for an early Dandy or Beano purely to find out WHAT THEY WERE LIKE but facsimile editions and the examples reprinted in the big "History of..." books have demystified them for me. same for me they are very disappointing but i know it was...

Re: What year did you start reading comics?

One more thing about Rupert-
When I was on my summer hols this year I noticed that the tourist information centre (!) at Minehead had loads of old Rupert Annuals, all priced the same low price (£2 I think it was) regardless of era. Wonder if they've sold them yet.

Re: What year did you start reading comics?

Just to be pedantic for a bit, Rupert isn't really a comic in the sense of pics and word balloons - known to me and others as a balloon strip. It falls into the category of a text strip, a very common form in many British comics. You find the same format and variations of it in comics and newspaper...

Re: What year did you start reading comics?

I have strangely never really thought of the Rupert stories as comics. I always found it was inpossible to follow the stories by looking at the pictures, or even reading the rhymes. You had to read the blocks of texts. So I think of it as more profusely illustrated children's literature. I agree wit...

Thanks so much Tristan! very kind of you.
I agree with your comments and with David's.
Maybe Lion specifically wanted art in the same style as Lopez's.
