Re: Add Monster fun
Apologies for this - you’re quite right, but it’s now too late.

Ray’s index is also printed in the Art and History of the Dandy.

Re: DC Thomson Fun-Sizes
325 and 326 were probably advertised in the back of 323 and 324. They were cancelled at very short notice when printing was outsourced and the Kingsway print works was closed to allow a decant during the refurbishment of the Courier and Meadowside building.

Re: DC Thomson Editors
Living retired editors include Euan Kerr (Beano), Morris Heggie (Dandy), Alan Digby (Euan's replacement on the Beano), and probably Dave Torrie (Beezer). I don't think Dave does email.

Unfortunately I wouldn’t move in those exalted circles, but you never know your luck here.

Re: Bully Beef, Jocks, Just Jimmy
I can confirm your memories don't fail you with the exception that I have never seen your uncle's work on Just Jimmy! I can't help with the original artwork, but for example your uncle drew Big Head and Thick Head for at least the 1966 World Cup Final issue of the Dandy. One Tun Two Tun was late ...

Re: When did the Megazine lose the free mag?
January 2024, I think. The bagged supplement was rolled into the main Meg, I believe to save a considerable amount on production costs - the new Meg has the same total number of pages as the old Meg and supplement put together.

Re: 2024 Annual previews
According to DC Thomson’s webshop (back for Christmas only) that’s correct. I suspect it’s a case of Beano and Dandy annuals sell more and therefore the softcover book needs a higher profit per copy sold.

Re: 2024 Annual previews
They won’t be on the DC Thomson shop this year, because it’s ceased to exist (how shortsighted), so I think Amazon is now the official way to get them.

Re: David Sutherland
I was at the funeral on Tuesday - it was primarily family and friends, with many present and former Beano and Dandy staff who had written for him.
There was a collage of photographs, and every single one of David as an adult had the same sparkly smile. Apparently the only time he was grumpy on ...

Re: The unofficial history of the Beano
My only complaints are that its not very critical of the Beano except a couple times. Including the artwork of the short lived Gordon Gnome story and the first series of the 2009 dennis cartoon. I feel kind of sorry for that artist. he's the only one the book criticises.
The main reason why it ...

Re: Who created Black Bob?
That Dennis story was reprinted in the 1970 DtM book.
The story on their Facebook page doesn’t add up. Prout would have been commissioned directly by DC Thomson, and the script editing would have been done by Dandy staff before being sent to Prout.
I’d want to see more information.

I'm afraid this was not even this week, but my most recent comics buy was 17 copies of Best of Whizzer and Chips Monthly from 1987 to 1989. Great fun reading.

The unofficial history of the Beano
Iain McLaughlin, who worked for DC Thomson for many years, including a spell as Editor, has now published his unofficial history of the Beano. Very strongly recommended.

Re: 300 issues strong
His work for the Phoenix confirms how great a storyteller Jamie is. His artwork is really good if you allow yourself to look at the skill with which he lays it out, the perspectives, and actually look at that greenery.
