Re: Creating and running a blog or website - discussion thre
I've had some experience creating ebooks. I'd recommend anyone interested in going that route to grab a copy of Sigil. It's a free ebook creation program and is incredibly useful. It's not actually that difficult to create ebooks that are every bit as professional looking as retail editions. Possibl...

Re: Female only societies in girls' comics
but the human female is surely far more complicated, biologically speaking, than lizards and aphids. I can only imagine it happening in the real world at some time in the far distant future, and only then if there is no possibility whatsoever of copulation with a male. Well, I said it wasn't far-fe...

Re: Female only societies in girls' comics
Of course any society made up only of women that have not had access to any kind of immortality potion has its own built-in obsolescence. Not so. They generally come up with some form of parthenogenisis fairly quickly. Either technologically or via nature. Which isn't even completely far-fetched. H...

Re: Female only societies in girls' comics
During the 1950s and '60s Hollywood brought out loads of schlocky films about all-female societies who get their heads completely turned when some beefcake comes along. Among them were 'Fire Maidens from Outer Space' and 'Mesa of Lost Women'. Oh, you have no idea. I started building a list of novel...

Re: Female only societies in girls' comics
Thanks for all the suggestions. You're right, The Silent Three and stories like that don't really fit. Nor do stories set in a world that is nominally co-ed but the males always seem to be off-camera. there are a few female evil masterminds trying to take over the world with their legions of female ...

Female only societies in girls' comics
I'm helping with a project about female-only societies and matriarchies in fiction and it made me wonder if these kinds of thing had turned up in British girls comics much. I couldn't think of any off the top of my head. Americans have the Amazons of Wonder Woman , but I can't think of any British e...

Re: GNFAR post on Misty
Regulars are what gives a comic its identity. The most successful comics have all had multiple regular character serials. It's always perplexed me why Misty had little beyond a cover girl.

Re: just an observation
I suppose it is just a cultural thing remember how women were glamorized in earlier hollywood movies. Then again glamorous women on comic cover stories probably did no harm where comic sales were concerned. Well, except for sales to female comic readers. A particularly painful example was the Emma F...

Re: Comics/Issues That Never Got Published
The classic lost girls comic is the final issue of Tammy. One story was left hanging, missing its final episode, while others that were intended to carry over to a merged comic were never seen again. There's been some research to find if any of the stories showed up in foreign editions, but so far n...

Re: Digital comics again
That's why I emphasized "instead of buying the actual comics", so as not to include the ones who wouldn't. That said, we'll have to agree to disagree because I think many of them would buy the comics if that was the only option. I accept that this is your opinion but you haven't cited anything to s...

Re: Digital comics again
As for statistics, I don't have any but I do remember the case of a notorious pirate whose website showed that some comics had been downloaded thousands of times. One being Black Panther, which was canceled because sales fell below 20,000 (or thereabouts). I'm sure the comic might have lasted a bit...

Re: Digital comics again
That's your choice and if you're ok with it that's fine of course. It's more a case of making the best of the inevitable, really. Well, the subject of royalties never even entered my head because we don't receive royalties in British comics. (Some graphic novels are set up like that but not comics....

Digital comics again
This came up in another thread and I didn't want to derail it so I thought I'd start a separate one. I know this has been discussed before, and it has a tendancy to devolve into name-calling and hair-pulling, but if it's okay with the mods I'd like to have another go and hope that folk can discuss t...

Re: Which comics can you read over and aver again?
I was taking it to mean the comics which are "comfort reading". They don't need to be good or popular, they just need to be the thing you might curl up with when you're ill, or sad, or it's raining and miserable outside. For me that's silly 1960s Lois Lane/Jimmy Olsen/Superman. I don't read them eve...

Re: Which comics can you read over and aver again?
I'd have to go with the goofy 1960s Superman group of comics - Action Comics, Lois Lane, Jimmy Olson, and Supergirl. Maybe some Legion of Super-heroes too. There were so many sparklingly daft ideas. Enjoyable for the fun of it when i was a kid, Enjoyable for all the subtext I can read into them now....
