Re: Are weekly comics doomed?
Parental approval is of course to be expected, I was just sad to see that in your example, that meant dismissing something partly because they didn't like the thing themselves. But that's a reality. Parents sometimes will not buy something that little Johnny likes, because they think it's either no...

Re: Are weekly comics doomed?
Not suggesting that at all LST, I'm all for maintaining or encouraging independence. I just wanted to show as well as lots of ads to the children they also communicated to the parents so when young Johnny or Debbie came along and asked for those comics the parents all ready new what they were talki...

Re: Are weekly comics doomed?
[ I'm not saying that children shouldn't be allowed to choose their own entertainment, I'm saying that they aren't necessarily the best informed as to what form the choices should be. . Kid does have a point, as well as advertising to the children in comics they also had adverts for the parents exp...

Re: Are weekly comics doomed?
H'mm. Confirms my suspicions then. Confirms what suspicions? Also, yes, I do think we should allow kids to choose their own entertainment from time to time. I remember we had a travelling book shop that visited our school when I was about 6, possibly 7. My mum and dad gave me my pocket money to buy...

Re: Are weekly comics doomed?
His mother may have said it in that instance, but you've also said the same thing throughout this thread, that kids (in general, it seems) will enjoy anything put in front of them, which in my experience (as illustrated) is not the case. The little boy in your example falls right into the Beano's ta...

Re: Are weekly comics doomed?
But he knew what he liked. Which seemed to be anything colourful stuck in front of his nose, Lew. Hardly what one would describe as a 'discerning' audience. I think the notion that children immediately love anything shoved in front of their faces is terribly incorrect and dismissive. My girlfriend ...

Re: Beano - just for kids?
I think certain comics (like The Beano) should most definitely be aimed for kids. We all, I believe, came to comics as kids, and sometimes I think it's easy to forget why. They offered us up something that was just for us, or so it seemed, full of anarchy and fun. The explosion of creativity in The ...

Re: What Dandy Character Would You Like Back?
What I'd love to see is more of Alexander Matthews, Wilbur Dawburn, and Andy Fanton. These are the three new talents who've come along who write genuinely funny material, but they're underused. They tend to have one page each. Am I really alone in thinking it would be great if these three had 2 or ...

Re: Comic character `spin -offs`
Dennis the Menace's gran was spun-off into her own strip too, wasn't she? 'Go, Granny, Go!' I think it was called. Fatty Fudge also enjoyed his own series of film and TV parodies, of course, the latest of which appeared in this week's issue of The Beano. And may I mention my very own Dave the Squirr...

Re: The Dandy Revamp 1 Year on
I think Andy Fanton has been a great find for the Dandy he can only get better and better. Awww, thank you, Peter! That's very kind indeed! I've LOVED working for the comic, and have found The Dandy to be great to work for - they let you get on with it and just have fun, which I think shows in ever...
