Re: artist for Jack O Justice / Highway Days in Valiant / Su

Bunter has been and remains a great favourite I haven't reads any Billy Bunter since the 1970s, I'll have to keep my eyes open. Thanks for the tip! While my general taste is "war, sport and school bad , interesting locations good ", I love good writing regardless of the genre. I remember some girls...

Re: artist for Jack O Justice / Highway Days in Valiant / Su

many of the early strips that appeared in Sun and Valiant were directly adapted from text stories Ah, that explains it. The best stories are so rich in detail that it seems like the writer really knew his genre then worked extra hard. If they simply chose the best of an existing text only series th...

Re: artist for Jack O Justice / Highway Days in Valiant / Su

Many thanks! As recent as that? I wonder how many readers recognised the story with different names from just four years earlier :) I had hoped it was older, because of the non-PC stereotypes: the black guy is a rubber lipped coward, dwarfs are evil, etc. It's good to see that in some ways comics (a...

Re: artist for Jack O Justice / Highway Days in Valiant / Su

Also, sorry for going on, but it intrigues me: obviously the images have been widened in places. yet the descriptive text, which fills the extra width, looks very old fashioned, so I assume that has not been changed. i read that the original Sun comic was large format: was the text originally in muc...

artist for Jack O Justice / Highway Days in Valiant / Sun

I'm reading old Jack O Justice strips from Valiant, and loving every page. Does anyone know the artist? The small villain faces look to me like the work of Dudley Watkins, but I am no expert. This example is from 8th December 1962. http://zak-site.com/other/Valiant-8-12-62.jpg Also, did the original...

Ah, got it! That 1970 thing is confusing. but I was only 2 years old at the time :) Thanks for the other examples!

The Wizard sounds like exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks! The other two are good as well, but Wizard fits the bill.

Comics relaunched with a new "first issue"

On an American comics forum they're arguing over the first comic to be relaunched later in its run with a new "first issue." The debate is over reboots in 1984 and 1986, but I can't help wondering if some British comic was relaunched long before that?

Re: FBI takes down illegal comics website

Loads of free comic strips are already available online for free but I don't think the creators / publishers are seeing much in the way of it generating sales of the "hard copy". A subscription service, like the UK Press Online one, would be a better option. According to those doing it , the number...

Re: FBI takes down illegal comics website

a great deal of material will never be released officially (can anyone envisage a big DC Thomson back catalogue appearing online anywhere soon?) Thanks for your comments, Kev. I really appreciate them. The majority of this art will be buried or lost forever, except to a diminishing number of ageing...

Re: Which comics felt more "real" to you?

I've never once felt that a comic strip was "real", - if indeed that was the aim of this thread. Perhaps Tolworthy could clarify as I'm still no wiser. Sorry for not being clear! real 1. true; not merely [pretended]: the real reason for an act. 2. actual rather than imaginary: a story taken from re...

Re: Why does nobody do compressed comics?

readers tend to like strips that are clear and snappy. I agree, certainly for the last fifty years. Some of those earlier text stories were pretty detailed. But a comic like that today would have to be aimed at adults. Perhaps at an art market. clarity of presentation is more popular than intense d...

Re: Which comics felt more "real" to you?

The king of comics: Probably StarLord. The first 12 issues were awesome. I especially rate Ian Kennedy's RoBusters for art but the stories were just terrific. I also think Tornado is horrendously under-rated. I only ever saw a few issues of this, but for me it was head and shoulders above 2000AD. T...

Re: Which comics felt more "real" to you?

As for "real" comics, again I'm afraid I don't quite get your point. ... I tended (and still do) to read comics for escapism, never to relate to them. The more outlandish the better IMHO (TV21, Marvel Comics, The Nervs etc). And that's the sensible way to approach it. It's the way the editors appro...

Re: Why does nobody do compressed comics?

what there is in 'masquerade' that made you choose it as an example. I think it's how I define comic. How I see them. And I think you've hit on the reason for any disagreement in this thread. When I say "comics" I'm not thinking of the Beano/Dan Dare/X-Men/Peanuts/etc. I'm thinking of something abs...
