I liked Ron Spencer's style. Being eternally unable to capture that 'flowing varying thickness of line that creates the illusion of movement' myself (as mastered by Al Hirschfeld) I really appreciated the fact that Spencer's work used a regulation thin line.

My early-nineties short-lived indie band the Zebras had a song called 'Jimmy Jinx'. I co-wrote it with our drummer.

Re: Smut
the poorest-ever title I ever encountered along these lines was an early '90s effort called 'POOT'. They were so hard up for material, they encouraged readers to mail in artwork for inclusion, claiming: 'it doesn't matter if you can't draw!'

All the other Viz clones are gone. None of them ever really understood what made Viz tick anyway, thinking it was just the obscenities that were needed to make an imitation work.
As Chris Donald himself put it, cynical publishers thought...

Re: Smut
The title I grew to hate most was Zit, who went bankrupt ripping creators and printers off (I was greatly out of pocket myself) then promptly resumed publishing as a new company. Ooh I shudder at the memory. Last I heard of that publisher was that he'd ripped off a load of kids by running a dodgy ...

Gordon Bell (Pup Parade, Spoofer McGraw)
One simple question...is he still alive?
I absolutely loved his work when I was a kid. Still admire it enormously now.

Re: Goodbye the Perishers
There was even a Perishers album, the Perishers Sing ! It was quite a revelation to discover that Maisie sounded like a cross between Suzi Quatro and Bonnie Tyler, Wellington sounded like John Lennon and BH Calcutta sounded like Michael Bates in It Ain't Half Hot Mum ! Marlon, if memory serves ...

Re: LEO BAXENDALE "ON COMEDY" BOOK
I've read it. It's quite interesting but rather heavy going. He seems to be inordinately upset because BBC2 used one of his illustrations out of context in the Arena programme 'Comic Warfare' about the Beano and Dandy back in the 1980s.

In part one, I thought it was quite strange seeing people roaring with booming laughter at some of the original strips. Much as I loved them, and even at their best, I never thought the British humour comics ever induced room-shaking belly laughter like maybe a Fawlty Towers episode might - more ...
