Re: Are weekly comics doomed?

Y'know, the wording of the thread is wrong.

We shouldn't be asking if weeklies are doomed, we should be asking how they can be saved. Two different ways of coming to the problem, and if we are looking at solutions rather than obstacles it clears the way for more radical suggestions to be put forward.

Re: Are weekly comics doomed?

there are a few notable attempts at extremely low-cost publishing which failed (albeit in magnificent, noble ways) the most interesting being the attempt to publish a newspaper full of comic art back in the... 90s? I don't have the details to hand, but I am sure that it didn't last nearly as long a...

Re: Are weekly comics doomed?

As for selling their presses, they've subsequently bought new ones, a photo was used in the Beano a few months ago! Hopefully this is a sign that things are going well - I would hate to see more titles disappear. :) If it is merely the economics of printing which this conversation is settling on as...

Re: Are weekly comics doomed?

I'm not quite convinced that printing on cheaper paper means that the cost of actual printing would rise. Not if it was a regular thing, but doing a one-shot - and the ancillary costs which comes with that - means per-page costs are more than a comic which has been running for a while. I don't thin...

Re: Pat Mills on mergers

Adds fuel to my question on another blog as to why men collect & have interest in girls' comics. I can't speak to the motivations of anyone else, but the opportunity to bring to light the obscure is a magnificent push - being able to find something... some piece of information, or the missing link ...

Re: Are weekly comics doomed?

About those chocolate bars... And please bear with me on this - I have a point The manufacturing plants aren't just pumping out their chocolate bars for the UK. Those same bars are going into various wrappers and being shipped to appropriate markets, with some countries getting their own plants due ...

Re: Are weekly comics doomed?

Weekly comics will die eventually, but if it is this decade or this century is anyone's guess. When movies came along, it was claimed that it would kill off reading / the theater / oral storytelling - none of which have completely disappeared. Then television was going to kill the trips to the Kine...

When did Night-Raven get really, really weird? That must have been late 70s or *just* into the 80s... :D

Always did like text stories in comics. :)

Re: Beano Punk

The final straw came (not how to make a Molotov cocktail as is widely believed) when Kids Rule Ok featured a group of youths kicking in the head of a policeman. It was a little subtler than that, even - the man isn't explicitly a policeman, but having his suit colored blue was enough for the recall...

Re: Advertising Strips

I've started grouping ads together and I'll be uploading them in batches. Some images still need to be fixed. The products that aren't clearly identified by manufacturer, I'll probably give the product a page of its own - and it is no good looking at the current manufacturers as the company name at ...

1991 one of the saddest day in the history of comics...loads of comic artists lost work...        :( There were two massive, widespread sackings within Fleetway/IPC titles - costing many, many writers and artists their livelihoods* - which co...

Another reason that print is better - which I was musing on as the generator began growling at me - comic and books don't require a power source. :D And I'm pretty sure they can't crash...

Re: Comic Relief Comic

The third panel of the Roger Mellie strip is rather, er, unfortunate. Well, I suppose they could just change the name of the celeb if they ever reprint it. With "the kids" bolded, I have been pondering some things... a) The comic was written in co-operation with people who were working at the BBC, ...

Re: Original, collected reprints - or digital? You decide!

DVDs have their own arguments among collectors - the first release, the director's cut, limited edition boxed editions with feelies, or the cheap repackaged editions... It isn't simple to compare comics to films, as there are multiple differences in the experience. Nothing beats watching a good film...
